Man (60) spat in face of shop girl

-

A 60-year-old man who turned on an assistant working in a shop, telling her to leave the country and spitting in her face was guilty of assault.

David Freeley of Beechville, Clonard stood prosecuted at Wexford District Court by Garda Declan Mulqueen of an offence against Sonia Imtiaz at Superdrug on September 6.

The judge read a letter from the injured party and the investigating garda reckoned that the defendant scared the life out of her with his behaviour.

Freeley was named on a warrant issued for his arrest when he failed to appear at a previous court sitting.

Brought back before Judge Gerard Haughton he said he was one of the people being persecuted by banks for money he did not have.

He revealed that he was now back on his medication and somewhat calmer as a result.

Solicitor Ed King was assigned to the matter on an earlier date but the accused man opted to conduct his own defence.

Freely assured the court that he is not a violent person and that what occurred in Superdrug was out of character.

He said he had been living without electricity for two years and commented: ‘We all have our breaking point.’

After reading the victim impact statement Judge Gerard Haughton reckoned that what occurred had quite an effect on the shop worker.

The seriousness of the offence was marked with a three month prison sentence being recorded.

However, the term was suspended once Freeley signed a bond to keep the peace for a year.

The defendant left court after wishing the judge and all officers of the court a happy Christmas.
