John fond ly remembered as insurance man
JOHN Reville of 1 O’Connell Avenue who died on December 29 was well-known and highly regarded as an insurance agent for Royal Liver in Wexford for many years.
John who was 89 years old died in Wexford General Hospital less than two days before the death of his younger brother Denny(79) who passed away in the same hospital on New Year’s Eve.
John is survived by his beloved wife Nancy; his daughter Ann; sons John and Barry; his grandchildren Aoife, Aaron, Shauna, Phoebe and Oscar; his great-grandchildren Faye and Hannah; his sisters Mary, Gretta, Bridie and Martha; his son-in-law Michael; daughters-in-law Jacinta and Siobhan; his nieces and nephews and his extended family and friends.
Born and reared in Ferrycarrig, John was a son of the late William and Mary Reville and was educated at Barntown school and Wexford Technical School before going to work in the former O’ Brien’s Furniture Stores at North Main Street.
He continued working there until 1971 when he changed jobs and joined Royal Liver Insurance as an insurance agent. He worked with the insurance company until his retirement in 1992 and was a respected representative of the firm, becoming well-known and well-liked by all the Wexford customers whose homes he called to every week.
John married Nancy (nee Reynolds) in August 1955 and became a devoted husband and father who will be remembered by all his family as a kind and big-hearted man who loved people and was always friendly and affable towards others.
He was a fanatical DIY enthusiast, carrying out improvements and repairs in the family home and later the homes of his grown-up children.
He was also a fantastic gardener.
In his early years, he was a member of a local mumming group. He was a life-long follower of the Wexford hurling team and attended matches from a young age.He also had a big interest in wild birds and always ensured they were well fed when they visited his lovely garden in O’ Connell Avenue.
After he retired, John developed a great passion for France and all things French and he and Nancy would holiday in France for up to a month every summer along with Nancy’s sister Liz and her husband Alan, travelling all around the country. He loved his glass of wine. He often boasted that he had climbed every mountain and walked every beach in France.
John was a month short of his 90th birthday when he died and his family are consoled by the knowledge that he lived a great life up to the time that his health began to deteriorate in 2015.
At his funeral Mass in Rowe Street Church, celebrated by Fr. James Cullen, the readings were done by his older grandchildren Aoife, Aaron and Shauna. Beautiful songs were sung by Therese Harnett.
John’s son-in-law Michael Howard delivered a lovely tribute to him at the start of the Mass which was attended by a large congregation of mourners.
Burial took place in St. Ibar’s Cemetery, Crosstown.
