WORK is under way at the former Chocolate Bar and nightclub in Wexford town which is to become the new home of Wexford-based tech start-up Scurri.

The company successfully applied to Wexford County Council for permission to change the first and second floors of the existing three storey building from night club to office use with ancillary areas at Church Lane Car Park and Common Quay Street and that work has now commenced.

The entrance lobby for the offices will be placed on the east side of the building through the former beer garden area. An existing dance floor on the first floor of the building will be converted into an open plan office area for Scurri staff.

Scurri’s Chief Executive Rory O’Connor said he expected to be in the new premises in the next couple of months.

‘We don’t have a firm date yet,’ he told this newspaper.

The expansion will provide a big boost to Scurri, which currently has offices in the Innovate building in The Bullring and several remote staff members in Europe. It currently employs 23 people and is looking for more staff working in a variety of disciplines

Last year, Scurri was named overall winner at the Wexford Business Award, taking the Business of the Year Award, as well as winning both the Innovation and the eCommerce/ Social Media Categories and taking the runner-up honours in the Logistics Category.

The company launched in Duncannon

Fort in November 2011.

Meanwhile, Colum Murphy, the managing director of Kehoe and Associates, said the ground floor of the Chocolate premises was likely to be leased as a restaurant-come-coffee bar.

‘No deal has been done yet, but there are several interested parties and there is a good deal of interest in it,’ he said.

‘With Scurri moving upstairs, the Bank of Ireland opposite and AIB beside it, there are good volumes of footfall,’ said Mr Kehoe.
