Council insists on safety meeting
MEMBERS of Wexford Borough District are not taking no for an answer when it comes to a requested meeting with Transport Infrastructure Ireland to discuss issues of road safety in the area.
TII wrote a letter to the Council saying it is not in a position to meet individual borough districts or to accept invitations to attend Council meetings due to the large number of meetings it would have to attend if it were to agree to similar requests from all local authorities.
However, it said it does meet County Council and City delegations comprising members and management, in its offices, to discuss ‘significant national road issues.’
‘Accordingly, in order to enable TII to consider this request, I would appreciate if you would confirm that the invitation is to meet with a delegation that is representative of Wexford County Council and executive, and not an individual Borough District,’ wrote Alban Mills, senior regulatory and administration executive.
Cllr. Lisa McDonald said this was another example of faceless bodies who are unaccountable.
‘Who is accountable, who is answerable,’ she asked. ‘I think we should just pick a delegation from this council and go.’
District Manager Angela Laffan said the issues that councillors wished to discuss are specific to the borough district.
Cllr. Tony Dempsey said people feel disconnected from those who are making the decisions. ‘I think we should write back and say we want to meet them, full stop.’
Cllr. Jim Moore said: ‘ This came about because of road safety issues. I think we should look for a delegation and that’s that.’
