WOMEN’S REFUGE

Wexford Women’s Refuge was inundated with gifts, donations, hampers, toys and food over the Christmas period. The generosity of the people of Wexford knows no bounds. The residents of the refuge certainly did no go short on anything for Christmas.

The Voluntary board of management ensured that Santa visited the Refuge on December 22 and there was a lovely little Christmas party held for the women and their children who needed our service at the time. Any surplus of food, gifts and hampers were distributed to homeless people and needy families in Wexford.

On behalf of the Voluntary board of management, staff and residents Bernie Mullen would like to thank everybody for their generosity and continued support of Wexford Women’s Refuge, which is a vital and very important service in the county. Well done, everybody.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Do you have 2-3 hours to spare weekly? Would you like to make hospital a happier place for a sick child? Children in Hospital Ireland (CHI) would love to hear from you.

CHI is one of Ireland’s leading children’s charities providing play and fun for sick children in hospital around the country for over 45 years.

We need your help to organise play activities for hospitalised sick children, from painting, helping with jigsaws or board games to simple arts and crafts or reading stories.

We are currently appealing for volunteers, to volunteer in Wexford General Hospital.

Our upcoming Induction and Interview evening will take place on Wednesday, January 25, at 6 p.m. in Wexford. Successful candidates will then be invited to attend a training session to be held on Saturday, February 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., also in Wexford. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a volunteer with CHI please RSVP to info@childreninhospital.ie/(01) 290 3510. We ask that you do not contact the hospital directly.

Hospitalisation can be a very stressful experience for both children and parents. Play helps to alleviate some of that trauma. Simple play activities introduce a reassuring normality to a strange hospital environment. It is a natural part of a child’s life and aids recovery. It also helps the child to build relationships and make new friends, and above all brings fun into the child’s life.

Volunteers must be over 18 years of age, enthusiastic, caring, reliable and have 2-3 hours a week to spare and be prepared to sign up for a year. All volunteer will undergo Garda Vetting/ Police Clearance. A comprehensive training programme will be provided for volunteers, as well as on-going support
