High-powered Mercs seized in dawn raid

-

A TEAM of around 20 gardaí – working in conjunction with the Criminal Assets Bureau – seized two top-of-the-range ‘171 reg’ Mercedes cars from associates of a well-known burglary gang in County Wexford recently.

Enniscorthy-based detectives, accompanied by local gardaí and heavily armed members of the garda’s Regional Support Unit, were present when the CAB officers impounded the vehicles - which have a combined value of around €90,000 - in the dramatic raid recently.

The high-powered cars were recovered in the dawn operation in the Brownswood area on the outskirts of Enniscorthy.

Chief Superintendent John Roche said: ‘ The cars were taken from the front of the house. They were seized under money laundering legislation and we are continuing our investigations into the vehicles and how they were paid for.’

Supt Roche said residents, who are aged in their 40s, were present when the vehicles were seized, adding that they are not originally from the county, but have been living here for some months.

He said no arrests have been made in relation to money laundering.

The cars were taken from Brownswood and secured in a special holding area at New Ross Garda Station. A source said gardai were suspicious that the vehicles may represent the proceeds of crime.
