CHILDREN’S EXHIBITION TROPHY WON BY SOPHIA

- COMPILED BY MARIA PEPPER

AN EXHIBITION of work by young entrants in the Wexford Lions Club open competition is continuing in the upstairs gallery of Wexford Arts Centre.

Sixty children from around the county, aged from four to 15 years, submitted paintings for the exhibition. The perpetual trophy went to Sophia Zipoli for her oil on canvas entry entitled ‘What time is it, Mr Fox? It’s Dinner Time’.

Coincidentally, the overall adult prize went to Martin Smith for a pen and ink drawing of a fox.

Hazel Duggan won the 15 years and over category for an acrylic painting on canvas called ‘She Wore Glasses’. Laragh Frawley won in the 12 to 14 years section for a mixed media on board painting called ‘ The Great Wall of Trump’. Carys Jones won the nine to 11 years prize for an untitled charcoal and pencil drawing on paper. Lexi Murphy was the winner in the six to eight years category for her mixed media on board work ‘Penguins’. Christina Lowney-Loring won the Under-five category for ‘Your Mate’, a mixed media on board work.

The perpetual trophy was initiated this year to celebrate the centenary of the Lions Club. In future it will be awarded annually for children’s works that best depict the ethos and remit of the organisation.

Entrants were encouraged to experiment with different materials from paints and glitter to buttons, transfers and lego. The exhibition was sponsored by Spectrum Art Shop and Wexford County Council and is running until February 18. Wexford Arts centre holds weekly art workshops for children of all ages.
