1 WE X FORD CREDIT UNION 5 KNIGHT RUN: One of the most popular running events in W ex ford, the Credit Union 5 k Night Run is set to attract a large number of participants and spectators this Thursday night. The event is 100 percent in aid of two local W ex ford charities, Marine watch and the W ex ford branch of the Irish Kidney Association. The run will start from the Quay front at 7.30 p.m. There will be live music at points along the route. The run will follow the same route as last year from the Quay out towards Ker logue with a turnaround, returning through The Faythe and main street with a down hill finish on Anne Street back to the quay. The race will be chip timed this year with individual results available to all. Last year for the inaugural run, more than 1,000 took part and more are expected this time around. Registration will be open in the marquee from 1 p.m. and there will be a raffle on the night with some wonderful prizes. Traffic restrictions will be in place from 6.30 p.m. to9p.m inWexfordtown. Sponsors include W ex ford Credit Union, SK Fitness, Roche Logistic Group, The Natural Health Store, Haven Pharmacy, Men apia Motors,PJ Firm an Plumbing and Wright way Insurance. 2 THE CHILDREN OF LIR – CELTIC CONCERT: The concert will be performed at the National Opera House on February 3 at 12 p.m and 8 p.m. The contemporary composer and musician Brian O’ Reilly is staging The Children of Lir Celtic Concert in Wexford with his brother Paud O’ Reilly and their band ‘Loudest Whisper’. The team behind the concert have been working with a strong male local choir, the nine musicians of Loudest Whisper, two local school choirs, a string quartet, four Wexford ballerinas to depict the story and all under the baton of young conductor Fergal O’ Connor. In total 120 people will perform this concert. Tickets start from €12. To book call 053 91 22144. 3 LIPSYNC CHALLENGE: Eight acts take to the stage in The Amber Springs Hotel, Gorey, on Saturday, February 4, to perform as their chosen singer in Gorey RFC’s semi-final of the LipSync Challenge. The winners go head-to-head with St Patrick’s GAA Club, Camolin, on Saturday, February 18. All support would be appreciated. Tickets are €10 or €5 for U12’s and are for sale from the performers or from Sullivan Property Lettings, Gorey. 4 CLASSIC ARTISTS NIGHT – NOW THAT’S WHAT I CALL 80s: The classic artists night is back with a tribute to the 80s on February 4 at the Wexford Arts Centre. The decade gave us some of the greatest pop stars in history including Madonna, Michael Jackson and Prince. Bouffe up your hair, get those shoulder pads out and get ready to dance as this is a standing event. The night will start at 8.30 p.m. and tickets cost €5. To book tickets call 053 91 23764. 5 OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS: The first of three heats of the 28th annual Opportunity Knocks competition takes place in Kilanerin Hall this Friday, February 3, at 7.45 p.m. The remaining heats are on the following two Fridays, after which adjudicator Debbie Byrne will select the acts to go forward to the final night on Friday, February 24. To enter an act, phone Helen Whelan on 087 6429291. There’s no entry fee. Doors open at 6.45 p.m. nightly. Entry to the hall is €5 for adults and €3 for under 16s. The event is a fundraiser for the upkeep and running of Kilanerin Parish Hall. 6 FOOTBALL: Wexford’s senior footballers swing into action in the Allianz League when they entertain Limerick in their Division 4 opener at Innovate Wexford Park on Sunday (2 p.m.). While the league has now become a barometer as to where a county’s championship prospects lie, Wexford for their part will solely be concentrating on winning promotion back to Division 3 after last year’s disappointment. With the O’Byrne Cup behind them, this will be the first competitive outing in charge for new manager Seamus McEnaney, and a real difficult one it is, given Limerick’s form in the McGrath Cup. 7 THE SONNET MAN: ‘The Sonnet Man - A New Spin on Shakespeare’ at Wexford Arts Centre at 8 p.m. on Thursday, February 2. Brilliant rap artist Devon Glover sets Shakespeare’s love sonnets to Hip Hop to both entertain and educate. Conceived and produced by Broadway Playwright Arje Shaw, ‘The Sonnet Man’ brings Shakespeare to young audiences in a genre they know and love, which introduces young people to classical literature, raises literacy, improves communication, creates greater enthusiasm for learning, increases creativity, raises confidence, and sets a foundation for the appreciation of the arts.
