LEINSTER CHAMPIONS

Well done to St Peter’s college on winning the Leinster Post Primary Senior Football A Final in O’Moore Park, Portlaoise last Friday with a 2-13 to 0-07 win over Moate Community School of Westmeath.

The club was well represente­d with Quinn Saunders and Cathal Devereux starting and Cian Meyler also on the panel. Well done, lads.

GAA LOTTO

There was no jackpot winner last Tuesday so we’re now up to €4,200. Congratula­tions to Rosaleen Keegan on sharing in the match-three prize. Tickets as always available in local outlets and from club members

TEXT ALERT

Our Lady’s Island/Tacumshane Community Alert have launched a text alert system. If anybody notices something suspicious happening within the parish they can ring Wexford Garda at 053 9165200 and if the Gardaí think it is important they will issue a text to everybody who has signed up to the text alert informing them to be extra vigilant, and too keep a watch out for elderly neighbours.

If anybody wish to join the text alert group they can contact Brendan Cooney, Jackie Sutherland or David Maloney, and on receipt of an €10 annual contributi­on their mobile phone number is added to the text alert list.

GAA CLUB AGM

Our annual General Meting was recently held in the Community Centre with the election of officers high on the agenda. Outgoing chairperso­n, Eamon Devereux chaired the meeting, rememberin­g the loved ones lost over the past year, and thanking all for their efforts throughout 2016, no matter how big or small a part each and every one played in the running of the club and wished the club and it’s members a successful 2017.

Elected officers for the coming year are: chairperso­n – David Maloney, Vice-chairperso­n – Nicky Keane, secretary and Registrar – Rosaleen Keegan, treasurer – Ger Carthy, Children’s Officer – Seán Carthy, County Board Rep – Ger Carthy and Club PRO – Alan Cloney. Committee members were nominated also with Hurling and Football Managers being ratified for the year ahead.

NIGHT ROUND THE FIRE

The ‘Night Round the Fire’ Storytelli­ng Night takes place in Tacumshane Old School this Friday, February 3, at 8.30 p.m. Come along sit back and enjoy the talent, music, song, storytelli­ng. Tea, coffee, cakes served at interval, all welcome, no charge for this community night.

‘SPLIT-THE-POT

Congratula­tions to Richard Davis, Airdownes on winning €146 in last week’s split-the-pot draw. Draw takes place in the Community Hall on Sunday after Mass. Thanks to all concerned.

‘LAY ME DOWN SOFTLY’

Ballycogle­y Players will present their three-act play ‘Lay Me Down Softly’ by Billy Roche on Wednesday, February 8, in Our Lady’s Island Community Centre at 8 p.m. admission €10. Looking forward to seeing you all there for our pre-festival performanc­es and supporting us before we commence our 2017 drama circuit journey.

COMMUNITY GAMES

The Community Games area swimming competitio­n which will be held in Ferrybank Swimming Pool on Sunday, February 12, at 10.30 a.m. Entry fee is €3 per child. Under-8s and under-10s will swim one length of the pool, under-12, under-14 and under-16 two lengths.

The ethos of Community Games is based on participat­ion and fun, children of all abilities are welcome to participat­e so come along and give it a go.

MONSTER EASTER RAFFLE

The Active Retirement Club will run their only fundraisin­g event with the Monster Easter Raffle again this year. Very soon the members and friends will be out selling their lines, great Easter basket promised and some other prizes too. thank you for your continued support. and anyone over 55 are most welcome to come along any Tuesday and join us.

SCOUT GROUP NEWS

Congratula­tions to Peadar Byrne and Michael carroll who have achieved the Chief Scout And Gaisce Award, the Chief Scout Christy McCann will present the boys with their award at a ceremony in Trinity College Dublin later in February, the group will also have a special event to mark this brilliant achievemen­t. the boys are now going on to work on their Silver Award. we wish them well.

Eoin Deenen is now working on his Cub Chief Scout Award for remainder of the scouting year. All boys are encouraged to try and achieve this award and at Scout Level it.

SENIOR CITIZENS PARTY

Thank to all who organised, all who sponsored, all the staff and especially all who attended the annual Christmas party which took place last Sunday. Thanks also to Maureen Codd and the musicians and to the Ballycogle­y Players. The music and entertainm­ent was brilliant. A great afternoon was had by all. Many thanks again.

SCHOOLS TABLE QUIZ

Congratula­tions to all 25 teams who took part in the Credit Union schools table quiz on Friday 27 th of January in Carrig community centre.

It ended up to be an exciting finish in the ‘A’ team – under-11s competitio­n with a tie breaker between four teams and St Anne’s National school Rathangan coming out with first prize. Team 11A who consisted of Conor Stone, Alex Scott Frame, Eoin Browne and amp; Aidan Brennan. First Prize in ‘B’ under-13s competitio­n went to Kilmore National School with team 2B comprising of Conor O’Reilly, David O’Reilly, Eimear Fortune and amp; Kennedy Cullen. Well done to all who attended.

Many thanks to Jess and Valerie, who helped out on the night as well as the children and parents who stayed behind to tidy up. I hope the dentist didn’t have to be called. Also thanks to our Quiz Master Billy McLoughlin who as usual done a great job.

Cleariesto­wn Credit Union are proud to be associated with the schools table quiz as students are a valuable part of our community. If you would like to join our credit union call into us in Baldwinsto­wn Friday 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and amp; Saturday 10 p.m. to 6 p.m. or our collection point in Carrig Community centre on Friday evenings 6.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. Everyone, who lives or works in our area is welcome to join. We had a great turn out for the final day of the winter league last Sunday, January 22, with 10 of our young athletes taking to the track - Girls U8 Catherine O’Leary 3rd, U9 Lucia Donohoe 8th, Hannah Kelly 10th, U12 Abby Lamber 10th, U13 Ciara Martin 1st and U14 Emma Carr 5th. Boys U8 Elijah Paige Remond 4th, Artem Kelly 9th, U9 Peter Stefanov 7th, U10 Lucas Paige Redmond 6th. Great running from all.

We held our AGM on Saturday, January 21 – full details of the new committee can be found on our Facebook page, Our award winners on the night for 2016 were Club Person of the Year went to Ciara Martin, Senior Athlete Emma Owens, Juvenile Athlete Gergely Pap and Most Improved Athlete Maeve Hayes. Other athletes that picked up certificat­es for great performanc­es during the year were Ger Moloney, Tara Connick, Sammy Delaney, Milan Kocacs and Rob Sterling, congratula­tions to everyone.

Best of luck to Ger Moloney on Sunday in the Masters Cross Country in Lingstown.

Maeve Hayes travelled to Glasgow recently and competed in the Scottish Open Indoor Athletics in the High Jump where she finished sixth overall with a jump of 1.51m. Well done, Maeve.

DRAMA NEWS

HAPPY RETIREMENT

Last week Nuala Wickham retired from Lloyds Pharmacy, Rosslare Harbour after working for almost 17 years. We wish Nuala all the best for the future. Thanks for all your help, warm welcomes and smiles over the years. You will be missed.

BEREAVEMEN­TS

It was with great sadness, we learned of the death of Brendan O’Brien, Cotts, Tacumshane and late of Tuskamore Terrace, Rosslare Harbour, who passed away suddenly on January 8. We extend sympathy to his wife Stella, brother Dermot, sisters Maud, Kathleen and Connie, nephews, nieces, brothers-in-law, sistersin-law, relatives and friends. Brendan’s funeral Mass was celebrated in St Catherine’s Church, Tacumshane with interment afterwards in adjoining Cemetery.

Sincere Sympathy is also extended to Margaret Keane and family, La Rochelle, Rosslare Harbour and late of Carrow Road, Drimnagh, Dublin 12, on the death of her husband Danny, who sadly passed away at Wexford General Hospital on January 12. Danny’s funeral Mass was celebrated in the Church of Our Lady of Good Council, Mourne Road, followed by burial in Newlands Cross Cemetery. Condolence­s to his wife Margaret, his daughters Mandy, Sophia, Terry and Margaret, grandchild­ren, brothers and sisters, great grandchild­ren, nephews, nieces, sons-in-law, relatives and friends.

May they rest in peace.
