Soccer glory for Gorey C.S.
U-15 Wexford-Wicklow final
THE GOREY C.S. Under-15 soccer team took on Kilcoole in the Wicklow-Wexford final in Arklow on Thursday.
On a wet and windy day, it was always going to be difficult to play football, and the team which best dealt with the conditions would come out on top. Gorey C.S. played against the wind in the first-half which made life difficult for Cian Browne in goal and the defence in front of him to play out from the back.
Rian Fitpatrick made his debut for the Under-15s and the first year was causing the Kilcoole defence all sorts of problems in the firsthalf. A great move led to the ball falling to Rian who did excellently to guide it to the very corner of the net, the only place out of the ‘keeper’s reach.
Cian Molloy also had a few half chances and the lads would have been disappointed not to take a bigger lead in at half-time, but they had put themselves in a good position and were playing very well.
The lads went out in the second-half knowing a strong wind was behind them and that this was something they needed to use to their advantage. Darragh Levingston was played in behind the defence after fantastic work in midfield by Cormac Doyle, and from an angle that was getting tighter as the Kilcoole centre-half chased down on him, he expertly curled his effort away from the ‘keeper into the corner of the net.
The lads were now 2-0 up and getting stronger. A third soon followed when a free-kick whipped in at speed by Ryan Connolly was met with a powerful header at the back post by Cian Molloy to the roof of the net, a third for Gorey and surely the killer goal.
Gorey were now playing with a swagger and air of confidence that had been growing and growing from the first-half. After some hesitance in the Kilcoole defence and good pressure exerted by the Gorey C.S. attackers, the ball fell to Rian Fitzpatrick and the young man duly tucked it away for their fourth and his second.
The lads were not done yet, with the ever hard-working Luke Greene getting his just reward with a cracking goal from outside the box with the ‘keeper left with little chance. It was 5-0 to Gorey C.S. and this is how it finished.
The defence of Seán O’Brien-Murphy, Adam Meehan, Ryan Connolly and Shane Gibson will be no doubt delighted with another clean sheet and will look to build on this solid display as they march on into the Leinster competition.
In midfield Cormac Doyle and Luke Greene worked as hard as ever, setting up most of the attacks. Eoin Murphy toiled hard on the right wing and the attacking trio of Daragh Levingston, Rian Fitzpatrick and Cian Molloy all delivered at important times of the game, with each getting on the scoresheet.
The presentation took place, with Gorey C.S. captain Cian Browne lifting the cup aloft and the celebrations began.
