‘Nobody indicates at Summerhill roundabout’

-

A CASTLEBRIDGE man who said that ‘nobody in Wexford’ indicates on the mini roundabout at Summerhill was fined €150 at last Tuesday’s sitting of New Ross District Court.

James Brendan Scallan (41), Oldtown Road, Castlebridge was charged with driving without reasonable consideration at the Summerhill road on February 5, 2016.

He denied the charge and Garda Robert Flynn said that at about 7.20pm he saw Scallan driving at Belvedere Grove and said he was ‘revving excessively’. Scallan, he said, exited the roundabout there without indicating and was again heard revving excessively.

He said that he failed to yield to traffic coming from the right at the Summerhill Roundabout causing traffic to come to a stop. Scallan, he said, went on to take the second exit off the roundabout without indicating.

At the Grogan’s Road roundabout he took the first exit off the roundabout without indicating and was then stopped by gardai.

Scallan said that he had made a complaint to the Garda Ombudsman about Garda Declan Dennehy saying he was being ‘harassed’ by him.

‘I’m being harassed and intimidated. That’s a load of lies. I did indicate at Belvedere. I was driving a 1.6 Vtec 2 Honda Civic and I never revved it.’

He said that at the Summerhill roundabout ‘I was going straight through. Why would I indicate. Ye (the gardai) were tailgating me’.

Scallan, who said he was a commercial fisherman, said he had restored the Honda Civic himself from a shell.

He said that when he was stopped by gardai they hadn’t told him he would be receiving a fixed charge notice. ‘I’m being harassed and intimidated. I’ve gone to the Ombudsman. I never had any hassle with the gardai. I’ve no record.

‘I looked up to the guards because of all the hardship they get but I’m being harassed because of the car I drive. Everything they are saying is complete lies.’

Scallan accepted he didn’t indicate on the Summerhill roundabout saying ‘nobody in Wexford does’.

Judge Gerard Haughton said the alleged revving of the car wasn’t the issue but said the lack of signalling was. He fined Scallan €150.
