TOP MARKS FOR WEXFORD PUPILS ON HEALTH AND FITNESS DRIVE

Operation Transforma­tion’s ‘10@10’ initiative proved a hit with primary schools

THREE schools in Wexford put down their pens and pencils last week to take part in the nationwide initiative, ‘Operation Transforma­tion 10@10’, where staff and students did 10 minutes of activity at 10a.m. MERCY SCHOOL, WEXFORD INSTEAD of learning maths and physics the students at Mercy School, Wexford, did the ‘10@10’ initiative where a camera crew were on site to record for RTE’s Operation Transforma­tion.

They combined music and sport for their exercise.

‘Our samba band led us around the school track where we all participat­ed in the conga.

The active flag committee then organised for everyone to do ten different exercises, including squats, jumping jacks and running on the spot. We then finished off with the Macarena,’ said Active Flag Coordinato­r Edel English.

Edel said that this would help them achieve the active flag, which they hope to fly this year.

A camera crew was at hand to record the morning events, which was featured on RTE’s Operation Transforma­tion Wednesday night at 8.30 p.m.

‘We are going to continue on ourselves with the ‘10@10’ initiative and cooperate it into our daily lives,’ said Edel. SCOIL MHUIRE, COOLCOTTS SCOIL Mhuire, Coolcotts, Wexford, took part in the nationwide initiative to promote health and fitness.

Adam Doyle, from Whiterock Hill, spoke to the staff and students about the importance of keeping fit and healthy.

‘ This year Adam made it to the last 18 of Operation Transforma­tion. He isn’t a leader but they still work with those who make it to the last few and, so far, has lost two stone,’ said Home School Liaison Teacher Laura Flynn.

The staff and students participat­ed in the exercises, with well known Wexford health and fitness guro, Eileen Rowe.

‘Eileen led us in the ten minute exercise session. We did a lot of aerobics, sit-ups and running to some music. The kids really enjoyed it and we had a great turnout with parents,’ said Mrs Flynn.

It was all systems go at Piercestow­n National School as students got on board with the all the exercises.

The Active Flag committee took on the challenge and put together a fun and energetic ten minute workout for all the children to participat­e in. The exercises were made up of aerobics, dance moves, and free styling.

‘ The committee put together a routine that had something for everyone. The children, and some of our community, got active to Gangnam Style, the Macarena and the Cha Cha slide,’ said principal Laura Walsh.

Even though the morning started out cold, by the end of it everyone had warmed up.

‘What a fun and energetic way to start the day. All the children received their “10@10” sticker for their efforts and we are delighted to add this towards our applicatio­n form to become a recognised Active School,’ said Laura.

Laura said that the children had so much fun, they are already planning what they could do if another one is held in the future.
