Wexford Albion win Division 5 crown

-

KNOWING a point secured them the Division 5 title, the onus was on Albion to demonstrate their superiority. They did just that in typical fashion, winning 3-1.

From the outset their approach radiated the energy and determination they have shown all season.

Albion showed all their worth as they worried their opponents with wave after wave of attack, slickly moving the ball and exploiting the gaps in the home side’s defence.

They swarmed all over their opponents, and when Caim tried to play it out Albion won it back. When they tried to push up Albion got in behind.

Danny Whitmore, Colm Heffernan and Steven Daly were superb in midfield as they combined to provide the necessary mix of verve and steel.

At the heart of defence Mark Lett and Ciarán Byrne once again received top marks as they were resolute and unyielding.

Up front Mark Browne was a constant menace as he threatened the Caim defence all day.

Top goalgetter Browne opened the scoring for Albion with his 19th of the season. It was swift, simple and incisive, the type of goal that marked the difference between the teams.

In similar fashion to their first the Albion second came midway through the second-half.

Setting the tempo ,the move was started and finished by the inspiring Steven Daly. His beautifully-weighted pass found attacking left-back Ian Malone who took the ball down his line and pulled it back to the onrushing Daly at the edge of the box, and he tucked the ball away into the net with ease.

Albion were up for this. Had all of the chances been scored, they would have led Caim by a greater score by the hour mark.

For the third Albion had gone hunting in midfield with Colm Heffernan seizing possession and Danny Whitmore slicing through Caim’s defence with a pass.

From there, Ben Nolan took control to slot away nicely. After an exciting performance, Ian Malone grabbed Albion’s fourth to seal his team’s title win.

The management team of Mick White and Andrew Butler praised the fantastic team spirit, hard work and the perfect mix of young talented players along with older and experienced players as some of their strengths. They also reserved special mention for Cian Rossiter who scored 12 goals before his season finished through illness.
