Plenty of cakes on offer for Stasia’s big send-off

- BY SARA GAHAN

STAFF NURSE Stasia Staples from Wexford town has put the uniform away following her recent retirement from Wexford General Hospital after 32 years service.

Staff on St Aidan’s medical ward presented Stasia with flowers and threw her a tea party, the biggest she has ever seen, with plenty of homemade baking provided by her friends and colleagues.

‘I never had a bad word to say about Stasia. She will be sadly missed on the ward. She was always willing to come in on her days off when we were stuck for staff,’ said Ward Manager Mary Mooney.

It all began in 1971 for Stasia, where she trained as a nurse in St Michael’s Hospital, Dun Laoghaire.

‘I worked there for three years before I went to James Connolly Memorial Hospital, Blanchardstown, where I served for nine months,’

‘From there I went to the Rotunda and was a midwife for a year, before going to do psychiatric geriatric for two years in St Coleman’s Hospital, Rathdrum,’ said Stasia.

After years of working in Dublin, Stasia started to move closer to home where she worked in Arklow for a year.

‘I got a job as a general practise nurse, working in Dr Connolly’s GP practise. I was only there for six months before becoming an industrial nurse in Night Visionaire. Again, I only worked there for six months,’ said Stasia.

Stasia and her husband Jim moved back home to Wexford from Arklow in 1983, where Stasia took a bit of a break from work, after giving birth to their first child.

In 1985, Stasia began working as a nurse again in Wexford General Hospital, and has been there since.

‘I started working as a temporary nurse for two years covering maternity leave. I went for an interview in 1987 and got a permanent position. Ever since then, I have been working on St Aidan’s medical ward,’ said Stasia.

Stasia thanked everyone for the flowers, kind words and baking, and will celebrate her retirement, this April, with family and friends in her local tennis club.
