John and Trissie were an inseparable couple

-

JOHN And TERESA (Trissie) Waters (née Ryan), from Ramsgrange - who died within two months of each other - were inseparable over their 53 years of married life.

The couple, who lived at Haggard, Ramsgrange, always had an open door in their home was full of love, happiness and cheer.

John passed away peacefully aged 91 on November 7 at the New Houghton Hospital in New Ross and Trissie passed away peacefully aged 87 on January 10, also at the New Houghton Hospital.

John grew up in Arthurstown. A man of the land he loved anything to do with nature. John worked hard in his garden providing all kinds of fruits and vegetables for his family, especially apples, potatoes and honey. He kept bees from the age of 17 and was quite immune to bee stings.

And not only did he keep his own garden in perfect condition, but he also worked as a professional gardener at Wallace’s, Coleman and following this in Dunbrody Park. He tended to the parish garden in Canon Doyle’s time and other local gardens also.

John’s famous Honda 50, which he later upgraded to a Honda 70, was his pride and joy. He wore his peak cap on Sunday’s and blue helmet during the week.

John loved music and a good sing song. He went into the community hospital in New Ross in December 2015 before moving to the Houghton Hospital in March where Trissie was able to spend some time with him.

John’s faith and family shaped his entire life.

Trissie met life straight on and in doing so was an inspiration to many people. Down to earth by nature, she hated fuss; her two mottos in life being: ‘get on with it’ and ‘we’ll be grand’.

In her early days she worked at a convent before moving to England. She returned home in the late 1950s to care for her parents. It was then that she met John and married him in 1963. A hospitable, friendly woman, Trissie had the rare gift of being being able to make everyone around her feel relaxed and welcome. She loved having people at her house for a cup of tea. Through her wit and humour they found in her a great listener and friend.

Her children also benefited from her baking skills, often descending on her house for a slice of her famous apple tart and some brown bread, She also loved sucky sweets and mourners were given sucky sweets as they left the church.

Trissie loved cycling, and could often be seen cycling with shopping bags on the handlebars as she cycled from the shop. She also cycled to Wexford and Tramore to visit family and friends.

A woman of great faith, Trissie had a great devotion to Our Lady and the Eucharist. Trissie passed away peacefully on January 10 following an illness.

Large crowds attended both John and Trissie’s funeral masses at St James’ Church Ramsgrange and their burials afterwards in the new cemetery in Ramsgrange.

The month’s mind Mass takes place on Saturday, February 25, at 7.30 p.m.

John and Trissie are survived by their children Mary, Liam, Joanne and Teresa; grandchildren, great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; nephews; nieces; relatives and friends.

May their gentle souls rest in peace.
