Anger over plan to up speed limit
A proposal to increase the speed limit on Ferrycarrig Bridge from the current 60 kilometres and hour to 80 kmh has drawn objections from Wexford councillors.
‘I think that’s too dangerous’, said Cllr Deirdre Wadding as she was presented with a set of draft bye-laws on speed limits including one to introduce an 80kmh limit on the Wexford/Enniscorthy Road ‘ between a point 600 metres north-east of its junction with the Ferrycarrig Road (R730) and a point 450 metres south-west of said junction.’
Cllr. George Lawlor said Council members have always made their opinions known about increasing the speed limit there.
Council Road Safety Officer David Codd said it was the decision of Transport Infrastructure Ireland.
Cllr. Ger Carthy said he couldn’t believe they would decide to increase the speed limit taking into account the number of fatal accidents that have happened at that junction.
The Mayor of Wexford Frank Staples said TII were invited to a Borough District meeting but they replied that they only attend County Council meetings.
Director of Services Eamonn Hore said this is what TII has proposed but the measure will have to go for consultation before it is implemented.
Cllr. Lawlor asked the County Council to make representations on behalf of the district and vehemently oppose the proposal. ‘ Talk about local knowledge,’ he said.
‘It’s ludicrous to increase the speed limit there,’ said Cllr. Anthony Kelly.
The Road Safety Officer David Codd said TII took the history of the junction into account.
