Wexford Celtic’s super run ends

-

AFTER AN incredible run in the prestigious S.F.A.I. Under-13 Cup competition, Wexford Celtic finally bowed out in the last 16 against a very strong Douglas Hall team in Cork.

The visitors put in a very determined performance and worked really hard throughout the field.

They were unlucky to lose Oisín Kavanagh to an injury early in the game but had Jack Corcoran and Kieran McGrath to step in. Eoin Diykem Charlie Hynes, Darragh Houghton and Cal Innes were outstanding in defence all day.

Celtic went 1-0 down after 15 minutes from a super strike from outside the box, but they kept going.

That soon became 2-0 when Douglas scored from a corner. It appeared that both Killian Whelan and Cal Innes were fouled in the build-up but the goal stood.

Celtic were 2-0 down at half-time, but there was a strong wind and they had it for the second period.

They pressed a lot higher up the pitch and were starting to cause problems for the Douglas defence.

A good individual goal from Douglas on 40 minutes looked to have the tie over, but the Celtic lads have never given up in a game and weren’t about to start.

They really had a go at the opposition, and the midfield of Harry Curtis, Eoghan O Lionáin, Brandon Treacy, Jack Dempsey and Darby Purcell were making life difficult for Douglas.

The breakthrough came from a good cross from Brandon that Eoghan finished to the net to make it 3-1.

At this stage Eoghan was controlling the game, and Harry was causing problems with, Cal, Eoin and Killian in goal really solid.

A beautiful free-kick from Eoghan brought us back to 3-2 but the clock was against us and Douglas saw the game out.

Without doubt, Douglas were the finest side Celtic have ever faced. They were skilful, athletic and very comfortable on the ball, but they knew they were in a tough game.

Celtic lads just never stopped trying and nearly caught them. They wish Douglas all the best in the quarter-final, and it’ll take a good team to beat them.

Celtic would like to thank them for their hospitality and acknowledge the very sporting way the game was played.

Thanks to all in Celtic and beyond for all the help, support and good wishes. It was really appreciated.

Celtic’s man of the match was the captain, Eoghan O Lionáin, who was simply outstanding.
