Glynn’s trip to Kerry

Spirits high at annual football event

-

GLYNN-BARNTOWN made the trip south-west to take part in the Dermot Earley Senior men’s cup at the Lidl Comórtas Peile Páidí Ó Sé, the famed adult ladies’ and men’s Gaelic football tournament and festival which took place across the Dingle Peninsula in Kerry.

A sun-filled Saturday all over west Kerry ensured the over 600 participating players were going to be in high spirits regardless of results on the field of play. Now in its 28th year, there is far-reaching and unwaning enthusiasm among clubs to experience the famed Gaelic football festival with visiting teams from 13 different counties, England and the United Arab Emirates taking part in adult men’s and ladies’ cups across Junior, Intermediate and Senior grades which took place in Tralee and various west Kerry G.A.A. grounds over Saturday and Sunday.

Glynn-Barntown competed in an eight-team Senior men’s cup named after former Chief of Staff of the Irish Army, Dermot Earley Senior, against four Kerry sides as well as Newbridge Sarsfields, Laois champions Stradbally and Dublin team Fingallians.

In the knockout competition the Wexford county finalists were up against south Kerry’s Waterville managed by 1997 All-Ireland medal winner Denis Dwyer, and the locals had too much fire power up front, hitting three goals in the first-half to make it too much of an uphill battle.

The final score was 3-15 to 0-9. Hosts An Ghaeltacht went all the way to the title, beating Newbridge Sarsfields easily by 2-20 to 2-7.

Comortas Chairman Pádraig Óg Ó Sé said: ‘The weather helped on Saturday and we were proud to show off the beauty of the area to the visiting players from Glynn-Barntown who conducted themselves very well down here.

‘It’s a pity they couldn’t get another game but we wish them all the best in the season ahead.’
