Shock at closure of Seafield Golf Club

-

THERE’S shock in North Wexford this week at the closure of one of the county’s best-known golf clubs.

Seafield Golf Club in Ballymoney ceased operations in the past fortnight. However, the busy Seafield Golf and Spa Hotel, which is located on the site close to the clubhouse, remains open and continues to trade normally.

The golf club itself opened with great fanfare in 2004 with one of its first golfers being the then Ireland rugby captain Brian O’Driscoll. The club attracted mainly a Dublin membership, and was popular with visitors to the area.

On the golf club’s website, which remains operational, the course is described as ‘Championship-standard’ which has been played by professionals such as Padraig Harrington, Justin Rose, Retief Goosen, Trevor Immelman, and Paul Lawrie.

It was designed by internationally renowned course designer Peter McEvoy.

Membership fees for 2017 are €995 for adult players and €250 for student golfers.

This newspaper understands that alternative arrangements are being made to accommodate visiting Golf Societies that had booked to play Seafield this year, in other courses in the area.

Public concerns for Seafield Golf Club arose in January when a decree was granted against the company in the local court for €50,912 in rates owed to Wexford County Council for 2012 to 2015.

As part of the evidence, rates collector Michelle Browne told the court that an application had been made to dissolve the company but that this had been put on hold after the Council lodged an objection. One of the club’s directors David Cullen was contacted for comment yesterday, Monday afternoon, but was unavailable to give a statement by the time this newspaper went to press.
