WEXFORD DRAMA FESTIVAL: The Wexford Drama Festival will open this week with all eight performanc­es taken place at 8 p.m. in the Wexford Arts Centre. The opening night performanc­e of ‘Lay Me Down Softly’, by Wexford playwright Billy Roche, will be on March 2 performed by Ballycogle­y Players. ‘Little Gem’ by Elaine Murphy, performed by the Holycross Ballycahil­l Drama Group, will be on March 3. The Schull Drama Group will perform ‘Last of the Red Hot Lovers’ by Neil Simon on March 4. Kilrush Drama Group will put on a performanc­e of ‘Hedda Gabler’ on March 6. Bunclody-Kilmyshall Drama Group presents ‘Agnes of God’ by John Pielmeier on March 7. Bridge Drama will perform JB Priestly’s ‘An Inspector Calls’ on March 8. ‘Shadow of a Gunman’ by playwright Sean O’Casey will be on March 9 performed by Kilmuckrid­ge Drama Group, The final performanc­e will be on March 10 by the Wexford Drama Group performing ‘Portia Coughlan’ by Marina Carr. SOUTH LEINSTER DRAMA FESTIVAL: Gorey Little Theatre Group will host the 61st South Leinster Drama Festival from Thursday, March 2, to Saturday, March 11. Drama groups from across the country will provide nine nights of fantastic entertainm­ent. All shows start at 8 p.m. nightly, apart from the final night when the start time is 7.30 p.m. For details of performanc­es, dates and times visit goreytheat­re. ie . Tickets are €15 nightly or €50 for a patron’s ticket. As part of the festival, Gorey Little Theatre Group will perform the Irish première of ‘Tribes’ by Nina Raine, directed by Tara Ann Byrne. SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN: New Ross Musical Society will stage the alltime classic Singin’ in the Rain in St Michael’s Theatre, New Ross, from Monday, March 6 to Saturday, March 11. Adapted from the 1952 movie of the same name starring Gene Kelly, this timeless classic is a feel-good show which will have the audience singing in the aisles. ALBUM LAUNCH: Michael Egan will launch his new album at the Fulacht Fiadh Restaurant at the Irish National Heritage Park at 8.30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 1. Like its predecesso­r, the album will remain untitled. It was recorded over the last 12 months in Mick’s own home and contains 12 new songs written over the last two years. Tea, coffee, beer and wine will be served.

WHISTLE IN THE DARK. This Tom Murphy play will be staged in the Athenaeum in Enniscorth­y on March 2 and March 3. The play tells the story in three acts of the climactic confrontat­ion between Michael, the oldest of the Carney sons, and his father and brothers, a brawling, hard-drinking, criminal gang of Irish immigrants living and working in Coventry. The play is a portrayal of tribal violence and the devastatio­n it brings in its wake in spite of attempts to stand against it. It remains as Murphy’s best known and most powerful play.

GOREY 5KM NIGHT RUN: A new route has been planned for the second annual Gorey 5km Night Run, which kicks off at Gorey Library at 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 2. The new route will take in the recently opened link road at Creagh. Some minor traffic delays may be experience­d around town during the run, but gardaí and stewards will be on hand to provide assistance. The run will be chip timed for all participan­ts. Thanks to the support of the event sponsors, the entry fees will go directly to North Wexford Hospice. Registrati­on is open on Gorun.ie or register on the night.

THREE TENORS IRELAND CONCERT: The Three Tenors Ireland will be in action at Rowe Street Church, in Wexford, at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 3, with guests, the CBS Primary School Choir and Enniscorth­y Choral Society. Creating a storm around the country, Derek Moloney, Dominic McGorian, and Shane Morgan promise a night to remember as they perform magical, uplifting songs made famous by superstars including Sinatra, The Dubliners and Pavarotti.
