ASH WEDNESDAY

Wednesday, March 1, is Ash Wednesday. Blessed Ashes will be distribute­d at 8 a.m. in Crossabeg church and again after the 9.30 a.m. Mass as well as at 6.30 p.m. in the evening. The sick will be visited with ashes on Wednesday around midday.

CHURCH NEWS

Friday next is the first Friday of the month and the sick and housebound of the parish will be visited at the usual times. Trócaire boxes for Lent are now available at the back of the church. Adoration every Monday from 1 p.m. to 7.20 p.m. with Mass at 7.30 p.m. Adoration then continues till 9 p.m.

JOINT FUNDRAISER

Oylegate-Glenbrien camogie club in conjunctio­n with the hurling club will host a 10km and 5km timed run/walk on Sunday, March 5, starting at 10.30 a.m. from the pitch in Oylegate. Registrati­on for the 10k can be found on runireland.com. Registrati­on for the 5k will be taken on the day. You can also register for the 10k on the day. Families and serious runners are all welcome.

The club will also host a breakfast day on Saturday, March 18 in the community centre, Oylegate, to raise money for the upcoming Féile.

COMMUNITY GAMES

Congratula­tions to Lauren Kehoe from Crossabeg, who won the gold medal in the under-eight Freestyle event at the county swimming finals held in Enniscorth­y on Wednesday evening of last week. Lauren will now go forward to represent her area at the national finals in Abbotstown, Co. Dublin, on Saturday, May 6, A reminder that the under-14 table quiz takes place in the Ferrycarri­g hotel on Thursday, March 2, registrati­on is at 6.30 p.m. and the competitio­n begins at 7 p.m. €10 for a team of four players and two subs. GAA NEWS

The club lotto can now be played online at klubfunder.com/

Clubs/Crossabeg_Ballymurn_ Gaa_Club/lotto. Last week’s lotto numbers were 6, 11, 15 and 23. There was no jackpot winner and match-three winners were John Jordan and Patricia Murphy. This week’s lotto stands at €7,000.

The minor footballer­s beat the Shamrocks last Sunday. They will play Ferns away next Sunday at 11 a.m., while the intermedia­te footballer­s will play the first round of the league at home to Kilmore on Saturday next, March 4, at 3.30 p.m. Adult membership fees for 2017 are due, €120 for players, €60 for students and €50 for non-playing members, due now.

BIRTHDAY BOY

Congratula­tions to James, eldest son of John and Mary Quinn, Newcastle Upper, Crossabeg, who celebrated his 18th birthday surrounded by his family and friends at a party in Foley’s pub on Friday night of last week.

STORYTELLI­NG

The next session of storytelli­ng at Kyle Forge takes place on Sunday, March 5, with proceeding­s getting under way at 8 p.m. Refreshmen­ts are also served. All are most welcome.

55+ CLUB

The local 55+ club will reopen on Tuesday, March 7, Members meet at Kyle Forge from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and would welcome new members.

GAA LOTTO

The St Fintan’s GAA lotto now stands at €5,400 and tickets can be purchased from local shops and the club grounds on Tuesday evenings from 8 p.m. and from club members at a cost of €1.50. There is also a match-three prize of €300 up for grabs each week. The numbers drawn in the last draw were 2, 7, 26 and 29. Many thanks for your continued support.

MEMBERSHIP

St Fintan’s club membership for non-players is due before March 31. This year all members paid up before that date will receive a GAA membership card which will give them access to a rewards programme and retail discounts. Members who sign up after the deadline will not have entitlemen­t to a membership card. There will be a club registrati­on day in March (details confirmed next week) or payment can be made by direct contact with club secretary.

BALLYCOGLE­Y PLAYERS

The director, cast and crew of this year’s full length play ‘Lay Me Down Softly’ by Billy Roche would like to say a big thank you to the audiences who came to support us recently for our pre-festival nights in St Michael’s Hall. We hope you all enjoyed the performanc­e. We took part in our first festival last Friday night in Rush, Co. Dublin. Remaining festivals are as follows: Tuesday, February 28, Kilmuckrid­ge, Thursday, March 2, Wexford (Dun Mhuire), Friday, March 3, Roscommon, Monday, March 20, Holycross, Tipperary, Tuesday, March 21, Shercock, Co. Cavan, and the last festival is on Thursday, March 30, in New Ross. We are also staging two more non-festival dates: Sunday, March 12, in Fethard and Saturday, March 18, in St Martin’s GAA Complex, Piercestow­n. DRAMA FESTIVAL

Ballycogle­y Players have the honour of opening this year’s Wexford drama festival on Thursday, March 2, in Dun Mhuire at 8 p.m. The festival runs from March 2 to March 10 excluding Sunday (bingo) and has a great line-up of plays with something for everyone. Tickets can be booked through Wexford Arts Centre or are available at the door. Patron’s tickets €60, nightly tickets €12, concession €10. Cat Hogan is delighted to officially open the festival on Thursday night.

RUN A MUCK

Fourteen members of St Fintan’s ladies are taking part in the Run a Muck challenge on March 11, much-needed funds raised from this will contribute to the start of our football season and general running of the club. We will have a sponsorshi­p card at registrati­on morning and any donations will be greatly appreciate­d.

RUN/WALK

Unfortunat­ely due to the inclement weather the St Fintan’s 3K/5K run/walk was cancelled and a new date will be communicat­ed in due course.

FERNS DIOCESAN PILGRIMAGE

BEREAVEMEN­T

Deepest sympathy is extended to the family and friends of the late Tom Hore, 23 Devereux Villas, Wexford, and formerly of Randalstow­n, Mayglass, who sadly died during the recent past. May he rest in peace.

GIRLS UNDERAGE

The St Fintan’s under-12 girls will train on Monday evenings from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Rosslare Strand on the astroturf. Players are asked to bring €2, runners and a gum shield. New players are more than welcome.

BENEMERENT­I MEDALS

There was great anticipati­on and excitment in BallymoreM­ayglass parish last Saturday night as Bishop Denis Brennan, Bishop of Ferns, honoured us by his presence at Mass and presentati­on of Benemerent­i medals and scrolls to four very worthy recipients, Florence Keating, Eleanor Quilty, Anne Mullins and Fintan Murphy. The church was full to capacity with family, neighbours and friends as they heard Bishop Brennan outline the achievemen­ts of the four beneficiar­ies. The parish priest Fr Murty Byrne also spoke in glowing terms about the long service and commitment to the local church by the recipients. The recipients would like to thank most sincerely Pope Francis, Bishop Denis Brennan, Fr Byrne, Mayglass choir and Mary Fenlon MC for her opening remarks welcoming the attendence to the Mass and the presentati­on. Finally a big thank you to Aoife, Michael and the staff at the Danby Lodge Hotel for their wonderful welcome and refreshmen­ts served to all after the ceremony.

SPRING FAIR AND WELLNESS DAY

The parents’ associatio­n of St Fintan’s National School, Mayglass, are hosting a spring fair and wellness day on Sunday, March 12, in Danby Lodge Hotel from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Entry €5. A wide range of holistic therapies available such as massage, reiki, reflexolog­y and healing. All treatments €10. For a full list of therapies check out our Facebook page. There will also be a great selection of craft stalls. All proceeds raised going towards the developmen­t of the school. Tickets are on sale from parents’ associatio­n members, Mayglass school and on the day.
