Kube launch night is huge success

- By

THERE were plenty of fun and games in Hotel Curracloe recently at the launch of The Kube.

The fundraiser which is being organised by Curracloe United is run on the same principals as the hit TV show and will see a total of 36 contestants battle it out to become the ultimate winner.

Chairman of Curracloe United Alan Monahan said this will be the club’s first major fundraiser despite the fact it has been in existence since 1971. The club are hoping to transform a grit training pitch which is adjacent to the club’s other three pitches into an astro turf pitch complete with floodlights, a project that will cost in the region of €180,000.

Alan said on the launch night the company who will be providing the set came down from Dublin and set up four games to show people how the games will be run, at least one of these four games will form part of the actual Kube games on the night of the fundraiser.

‘We have 36 people taking part in six rounds and two people will go forward from each of the rounds. On the night we will be selling a platinum ticket to the audience members for €5 and if they are picked out they will automatically get to compete in the last heat of the competition.

‘All of the 36 people participating have to raise a minimum of €300 to compete and the person who raises the most sponsorship money will be automatically entered into the final even if they are eliminated in their respective heat.

‘However noone will know until the night how each individual is faring with their fundraising. Taking part on the night will be Kevin O’Connor who is originally from Curracloe who plays for Cork City and is a Under 21 international as well as Mayor Frank Staples. As chairman of the club I also put myself forward and we have four ladies taking part as well - Ann Marie Blake, Roisin Doolin, Ciara Connor and Linda Shiggins Carley.

‘County footballer Eoghan Nolan is also braving the Kube on the night.’

‘ The support we have received from local businesses in terms of advertising in our souvenir brochure has been absolutely top of the range, we couldn’t ask for more.

‘We hope to raise in the region of between €25,000 and €30,000 on the night and are also applying for various grants to help fund the project. We have no problem taking out a loan to pay for the works but we are hoping that any loan wouldn’t be too much of a burden on the club so hopefully the grants will come to fruition.’

Alan said that the club had looked at three different options when deciding on the astro turf, the current option with lights which is €180,000, a astro turf pitch which would be double the size of the current proposal costing €400,000 or a full size all weather pitch costing €1million.

‘We decided to go down the route we are going because by doing this we won’t be forced into a position where we have to rent out the pitch and it can be used for underage members. This way the pitch will be pretty much available to the younger players all the time and there is a real emphasis on underage development at the club.’

The Kube will take place on April 29 at 8pm in Hotel Curracloe which is the main sponsor of the event and there is a prize fund of €1,000 for the ultimate winner.
