TAGHMONSOCIETY

The society played Mount Juliet Golf Club on March 18 in an outing that was the brainchild of Captain Seamus McLoughlin who insisted that we have a treat this year and visit one of the best courses in the country.

The society subsidised the cost to all members, and 51 very grateful players turned up. The course was in great condition and the greens were superb, as was the setting and scenery even though it was in Kilkenny! The course is well worth a visit as an indulgent pleasure. Thanks Seamus, and can we do it again next year?

A big welcome to two new members, namely Jimmy O’Leary and John Walsh. The honours went to Donie O’Brien who had a course-crushing score of 42. Am I correct in saying this is your first society win? Well done.

Results: 1, Donie O’Brien (21), 42; 2, Nicky Murphy (16), 40; 3, Andy Culleton (19), 39; Cat. 1, Rory Murphy (9), 38; Cat. 2, P.J. McGrath (18), 37, again; Cat. 3, Eamon Roche (28), 37, again; front nine, Barry McGrath (15), 20; back nine, Joe Doyle (7), 21; nearest the pin, Ted Mangan (third), 7’, and Tom Furlong (14th) 8’, after being robbed at the third as well!; visitor, Leo Booth.

The honours were handed out in our home base of Alice Brady’s pub in Taghmon. There were three winners of the twos club which had a very healthy pot that carried €82 forward from the last outing and was swelled to €183 (yes, €183; who left it a euro shy?).

Everyone was keen to get their hands on the big pot but only three could manage it, namely Steve da Luca, new man Jimmy O’Leary (we need to watch him!) and the old reliable Anthony Wadding yet again. The two nearest the pin men couldn’t manage it, but the latter did it at the second attempt though.

The ever-popular Joe Cashin was the winner of our lottery bonus ball.

The next outing is in Borris G.C. on April 15 at 10 a.m. and there will be a timesheet in operation, so be early please. Please contact a committee member to book in. Bring along a friend or a lapsed member as a visitor.

ROSSLARE

The singles in Rosslare on March 19 was won by one of our most consistent players, Pat Rossiter. Pat (9) won with 37 points, a sign of how difficult the course is playing at the moment.

He had birdies on the fifth and 16th, in halves of 19 and 18 points. Second, on 36 points, was Darragh O’Donohue (15), who birdied the 18th for a back nine of 20 points. He beat P.J. Doyle (5) on the breakdown.

Mark Mullen (+1) had birdies at the fourth, sixth, 13th, 16th and 18th to win the gross, while Paud O’Brien (4) won the veterans with 33 points.

Team of four (any combinations): 1, Nicky Mernagh (6), Mark Fitzpatrick (8), Stan Jackson (13), Colman Doyle (18), 87 points; 2, Anthony Duggan (5), John Barron (8), Cathy Atkinson (11), Kevin Foran (13), 84 points; 3, Joe Moran Jnr. (6), Willie White (11), Joe Moran Snr. (15), Davy Rowe (22), 79 points.

Fourball: 1, Boyd Scott (15), Eamonn Mullan (17), 44 points; 2, Ray Quinn (12), Bill Underwood (18), 42 points.

Our Fred Daly team got off to a blistering start with a big win over a very young Wexford team. The team, which won 5-0, was John Brady, Brendan Rossiter, Martin Roche, Nathan O’Brien and David Reck.

The annual two-day boys’ international between Ireland and Wales was played over the weekend. Although fielding their second team, Ireland proved too strong for the visitors.

Well done to Paul Murphy, who finished fourth in an Inter-University event in America, where he is studying. This was a great performance from an entry of over 70.

Fixtures: Saturday, April 1, ladies’ and gents’ fourball, open to visitors paying green fees; Sunday, April 2, gents’ singles (A), monthly medal (Blue), strokes (B), stableford (green), veterans only.
