You won’t believe what’s in store for the Quayfront...
MULTI-MILLION EURO PLAN UNVEILED:
MEMBERS of the public were given the chance to have their say on how Wexford’s quayfront should look and operate in the future at an consultation event in the Talbot Hotel which was hosted by Wexford County Council and Scott Tallon Walker, the architects charged with drawing up a visionary revitalisation plan for the harbour amenity.
The architectural firm brought in transport engineers, urban designers and landscape architects to assist with the bold project and have come up with draft proposals and ideas which were unveiled to the public last Wednesday.
Townspeople had a chance to talk to the architects and to offer their own thoughts on how the quayfront should be developed in order to maximum its contribution to the recreational, leisure and tourism life of the town.
Submissions can still be made for another month on the local authority website. Consultations have already taken place with trawler owners, fishermen, the Chamber of Commerce and other groups.
A revised draft of the Wexford Quay Economic Development and Spatial Implementation Plan taking on board public viewpoints is expected to be presented to the Council soon but it is such a large scale project that it could be 20 years or longer before the full programme is completed on a phased basis.
A €1 million grant from the Government to be matched by an equal amount from the County Council will be spent on the upgrade of paving, lighting, signage, seating and landscaping along the quays in what are described as ‘public realm’ works.
