New Button & Spoon Tearoom at Keywest Shopping Centre is a hive of activity

HE Button & Spoon Tearoom has, up until this point, been synonymous with the rural village of Bridgetown but at the beginning of March Nuala and Nigel Grant opened their second tearoom at the Keywest Shopping Centre, Wexford.

From the moment the doors opened the tearoom has been busy with a queue that can be regularly seen from outside, made up of both new customers and Bridgetown regulars.

Like the Bridgetown restaurant the new tearoom has been very much a team effort with Nigel managing the complete renovation of the building and Nuala drawing from the Bridgetowntown template when doing the design and decor. In fact, Nuala did many of the pieces of art which adorn the walls and the button flower table arrangements, all of which make the tearoom so completely unique.

Button & Spoon has built it’s reputation by serving great food that is prepared using fresh and locally sourced ingredients and this has earned them it’s membership of Good Food Ireland. However, the cakes are probably one of the biggest talking points and a huge attraction to young and old alike with a large selction baked fresh every single day in the kitchen.

Button & Spoon bake their own brown breads daily – both high fibre multi-seed loaves and traditional brown soda. There is also a range of wonderful Gluten Free and Dairy Free cakes from Eileen O’Flaherty.

Scones, cakes, tarts, cookies and jams are prepared daily using traditional recipes and are best accompanied with their Fair Trade coffee or the extensive range of flavoured and herbal teas.

All the coffee is Organic and Rain Forest Alliance Certified and has been ethically sourced using years of experience and having a solid working relationship with the coffee farmers. The very finest coffee beans are selcted for hand-roasting and that is what makes your cup of coffee there taste so good. The grinds make wonderful fertiliser too so owners Nuala and Nigel never throw them away, if you would like some just ask when paying for your bill.

With the opening of the Wexford town location the team of staff has risen to 22 and the success of the business is down to the very high standard of customer service which the team delivers. Nuala and Nigel are very passionate and determined to hire nice people and they have been exceptionally lucky to have found some.

Nuala said: ‘ They are a hard working bunch of people who genuinely care about our customers, they take great pride in their work and delivering our dream, we feel very lucky to have them. The food business can be an extremely challenging environment in which to work, staff in this industry work while everyone else is out enjoying their weekend and it takes patience and professionalism to be able to continually deliver high quality food and service under pressure. Nigel and I have the pleasure of working with a team of happy, positive, and driven people who make us very proud.’

Both the Bridgetown and Wexford town tearooms are open from Tuesday to Sunday each week. A full breakfast and lunch menu is served in both locations everyday with Sunday brunch being served until 1.30 p.m. in the Wexford tearoom.
