Students dance to raise awareness of suicide

- By

FOUR hundred students stepped it out for a good cause when they attended a céilí against suicide at the Talbot Hotel in Wexford.

Students from several Wexford schools gathered together at a special Céilí Mór in aid of Cycle Against Suicide, a charity that helps to promote positive mental health in schools and communities across Ireland. Among those who addressed the attendance was CBS student Paddy Dobbs who became involved with Cycle Against Suicide two years ago.

He said that after an experience in his own family he ‘decided that I would do what it takes to make a difference, even if I just help one person along the way.

‘It is an amazing programme and an amazing journey. I would recommend that you do it as it is a great feeling being able to help people out,’ said Paddy, talking about Cycle Against Suicide.

The schools that took part in the céilí, many of which have been active supporters of the organisation since its foundation a few year’s ago, included Wexford CBS, Selskar College, Loreto Secondary School, St Peter’s College and the Presentation Secondary School.

CEO of Cycle Against Suicide and radio presenter Colm Hayes reminded the students that a problem shared is a problem halved.

‘ The most important thing about this organisation is that it is OK not to feel OK and it is OK to ask for help. Help is a two way street. We need to look after each other, if you know of someone in need, talk to them or let them know you are there.

‘I just want to thank all of you who have come out today to take part in the céilí dancing and thank you for the support, it is a great organisation,’ said Colm. Deputy Principal of Wexford CBS, John Hegarty, conducted a quick experiment by asking the students how many of them knew of someone who might need help?

‘So more than half of the room have their hands up. To all of those that have a show of hands I would urge you to talk to that person. Never leave it on the long finger,’ he said.

The céilí against suicide organised by Wexford CBS, and also the help from other Wexford schools, highlights the team effort from staff and students.

‘ Together Wexford can help break the cycle of suicide,’ said Mr Hegarty.
