Cloughbawn close in on potential Under-11 double

-

AFTER ALL the excitement of the previous week, a bumper calendar of Wexford and District Schoolboys soccer action failed to crown any champion. However, plenty of league titles eased closer to being decided and several cup semi-finalists are now known.

Cloughbawn are now just three wins from a league and cup double after hammering Gorey Celtic A in the Under-11 semi-final during the week.

They will meet the only unbeaten side in the age-group in the last four, runaway Division 2A leaders Bunclody.

Gorey Rangers will face the winners of North End and Forth Celtic in the other semi.

Curracloe United are the first side through to the Under-12 Cup semi-finals after coming from 2-0 down to beat Shelburne.

They will have to wait a while for their opponents as there are still outstanding third round ties to be played.

In the league, a second consecutive 0-0 draw for Gorey Rangers kept them unbeaten. Forth Celtic and New Ross Town sit a point above the title favourites with St. Joseph’s, winners at Bridge Rovers, three clear at the summit. Meanwhile, Gorey Celtic grabbed a late winner against Courtown to stay a point clear of New Ross Celtic at the top of Division 1A.

An incredible five sides are all within one point of each other at the top of the razor-tight Division 2.

Oylegate joined inactive Glynn Barntown at the top with a win against Rosslare Rangers. Fastnet, who along with Rangers and Shamrock Rovers are just behind the top two, beat a spirited Caim side.

Corach Ramblers stretched their lead at the top of Division 2A to five points with victory against Ferns. However, Bunclody, with four games in hand, also won and are sitting just seven points behind.

Elsewhere, Forth Celtic B joined Shelburne at the top of Division 3 with victory against New Ross Town B, while Cloughbawn also won to move a point behind the top two.

Rosslare Strand will face St. Joseph’s in the Under-14 Cup semi-final after both won their last eight clashes on Saturday. Strand went to New Ross Town and surprised their hosts 3-1, while St. Joseph’s proved too strong for St. Leonards. North End thrashed Kilmore and await the winners of Gorey Rangers and Bridge Rovers on the other side of the draw.

Gorey Rangers, win-less in the league, shocked North End United in Hollygrove to book an Under-16 Cup semi-final with New Ross Celtic, winners against Campile.

In the other last four clash, Forth Celtic will play the winners of Ferns and Cloughbawn, who meet this evening (Tuesday).

The top of the table clash in under-16 Division 4, between Gorey Celtic and Bridge Rovers, was postponed.

It gave Wexford Celtic the chance to close the gap at the summit and they were able to do just that with a hard-earned 3-2 win over New Ross Town in Good Counsel.

Another bumper week lies ahead with the even age-groups going at it midweek and the odds coming back at the weekend as the countdown continues to the end of the season.
