COURTOWN

Tuesday, March 28, saw our ladies play the first 18-hole competition of the year. The day was sponsored by Cois na hAbhann Garden Centre who are new sponsors this year.

A large number of ladies took to the course to play in this competition and some terrific scores were returned.

Results: 1, Mary Egan (26), 42 points; 2, Eileen Wheeler (36), 40 points; 3, Elizabeth Kiernan (36), 39 points; Cat. A, Pat Kinsella (18), 34 points; Cat. C, Louise Holohan (36), 33 points.

The nine-hole competition was won by Jo O’Hara (35) with 20 points, and second was Rita Reynolds (35) with 19 points.

On the Wednesday sweep final day for 2016-’17, for the first time in 20-odd years, there was a tie for the Paschal Storan Cup between Tom Kitt and Pat Carthy.

It was decided by the Wednesday sweep committee to have a play-off between Tom and Pat at a later date.

Last year’s Captain, Kerryman Seamus Kennelly, had a hole-in-one on the final day. Committee Chairman Pat McCarthy made a presentation of a bottle of brandy to him.

We finished the day and evening with an excellent meal, with wine, music and singing. Once again Pat Bernie, our M.C., kept the evening alive.

Club President George Kilbride and Captain John Fitzgerald sat down with us for the meal and took part in the evening’s fun. Pat McCarthy, Paddy Stack, and Tom Lynch did a first class job of organisation.

Wednesday, March 29, sweep results: 1, Pat Carthy (16), 28 points; 2, Declan O’Rourke (21), 27 points (back nine); 3, Seamus Kennelly (7), 27 points; 4, Des Roche (5), 26 points; 5, Liam Flynn (15), 25 points; 6, Les Masterson (21), 24 points.

The members of Courtown Golf Club received some very sad news this week - Ann McNamara had passed away following a long illness. Ann was an active member of the club for many years and will be sadly missed by all her friends in the club. May she rest in peace.

Saturday saw our Minor Cup team take on Waterford Castle in Wexford. They had a great win. Well done to manager Pat Walters and the team.

On Tuesday, April 4, we play Scotch foursomes. It is the Granard Cup qualifier and is sponsored by Whelan’s Pharmacy.

Thursday, April 6, will see lady President Marcella Jones take the Challenge Cup team to play against Blainroe in Arklow. Good luck ladies.

Saturday, April 8, Courtown play Ballymoney in the Provincial Towns, while Sunday, April 9, our mixed team take on New Ross with three pairs away and two at home. Good luck everybody.

Anybody interested in playing in the singles, fourball and mixed matchplay competitions, please enter your name before the draw takes place on Wednesday, April 5, at 8 p.m.

The recent inclement weather meant that Ballymoney could not host the two games due to be held at their course, so all five games were played in Enniscorthy. Congratulations to all players and their manager, Joe Delaney.

The course fairways are due to be sanded on Wednesday, April 5, although it’s weather dependent. The course is due to be closed until 12 noon. Apologies for the inconvenience but it is for the long-term good and has to be done.

BALLYMONEY

The mid week nine-hole fell foul of the poor weather. The persistent rain also meant that unfortunately the course was not playable for the fourball matchplay versus Enniscorthy.

The five matches were played Saturday afternoon in Enniscorthy, with the home team emerging victorious.

Sunday singles stableford: 1, Anthony Fortune (15), 38 points (including an eagle 3 on the par 5 13th hole); 2, Ger McNally (19), 38 points; 3, Charlie Logan (12), 38 points.

Winter league semi-finals: Richard Temple and Tom Keogh beat Pat Miskella and Anthony Doyle; Martin Conroy and David Fitzgerald beat Eugene O’Brien and Paul O’Brien (plate semi-final).

ROSSLARE

Paul Boggan (11) was the winner of the singles in Rosslare on Sunday week. There was a big turn-out and scoring was good.

Paul birdied the second but failed to score points on the eighth, turning in 18 points. He dropped shots at the tenth, eleventh, 13th and 14th, but put in a storming finish of 4, 4, 3, 4 (two under par) for 39 points and a one-point win.

Second was Ray Roche (6) who birdied at the sixth and twelfth, but a six on the twelfth proved costly.

In third position on 36 points was another six handicapper, Gavin Smith. He had halves of 17 and 19 points. Mark Mullen (+1) failed to score points on the first and 18th, but in between, had birdies on the tenth, twelfth and 13th to win the gross with 33 points.

Robin Gardiner, one of the most consistent players in the club, won the veterans with 35 points.

Burrow course: 1, Joe Moran Snr. (15), 27 points; 2, Dermot Crookes (16), 25 points.

Our first adult team of the year to compete, the Leinster fourball, went down to a heavy defeat to Wexford, losing all five matches.

The team was Ned Kinsella, Joey Leacy, John McDonald, Robin Gardiner, Tom McGrath, Seamus Dooley, Stephen Conway, Paul McDonald, Joe Cummings and Alan Murphy. The managers were Ted Tierney and Paul Boggan.

Entries are now open in the Pro Shop for the club match player competition and the Pettitt and Walsh Cups. The closing date is April 17. Please give your name and entry fee to either of the two Jamies.

ROSSLARELADIES

Last Tuesday was a foursomes strokes competition and a testing format it is too, so much so that some ladies played a stableford version and others forgot to take alternate drives in error and were thus disqualified. But such is golf.

However, there was no doubt who were the clear winners - our newly joined-up member, Paula O’Leary, and Vonnie O’Connor. Well done ladies and a warm welcome to you Paula to the club!

The teams are now out in full swing and best of luck to: the Junior Cup team managed by Mary O’Shaughnessy and Dorcas Maher playing in Wexford on Sunday, April 9, against Waterford Castle; the Intermediate Cup team managed by Niamh Byrne and Vandra Deacon playing in Enniscorthy on Monday, April 10, against Waterford. All supporters will be welcome.

The next outing will be in Ballymoney golf course on Sunday, April 23, and the first tee-time is at 10.30 a.m. All members and intending members are invited to attend

NEWROSS

Good weather favoured the running of the 18 holes singles stableford sponsored by Michael O’Connor from the Carpet Gallery, New Ross.

There was a large entry including a number of visitors and also some ladies taking part. With summer rules now in operation and placing gone, scores were down somewhat on recent events.

However, P.J. McGrath (18) defied the odds and brought in a winning score of 38 points, whilst Seamus Phelan (13) took second place with 37 points.

A better back nine saw Joe Doyle (9) finish third, also with 37 points. Michael Ryan (+2) scored 34 points to emerge the gross winner.

Categories 1 to 3 went to Michael P. Cullen (9) with 35 points, John Browne (13) with 36 points, and David Byrne (20) with 36 points.

All prize-winners are asked to attend the presentations, with the next one on Tuesday evening, April 4. A reminder to all those who have not paid their 2017 subscriptions: they are asked to do so as soon as possible.

The first Tuesday evening fourball got off to a wet start last week when understandably a small field took part. Sponsored by Mullinavat G.A.A. club and played over nine holes, the winners were Robert O’Dwyer (20) and Martin Furlong (22) with 23 points.

The two Tommys, Liston (7) and Tyler (16), scored 21 points to secure second prize while the mixed pair of Joe Kelly (11) and Kay Bolger (14) took third with 20 points.

This Tuesday evening (April 4) the New Ross Seniors group will sponsor the prizes when hopefully the weather may take a turn for the better. You may play any time on Tuesday but booking is essential after 2 p.m.
