NEWROSSSENIORS

Our first away outing of the year saw us travel to picturesque Gowran Park on Monday where we enjoyed a day something like you’d get on the Costa Del Sol.

The sun shone brightly all day through, and with carpet-like fairways and lightning-fast greens we could not have chosen a better venue. As usual, a warm welcome awaited us both from director of golf Ann Marie Scannell and Jim Byrne in the bar.

The competition went like clockwork and a tribute is due to all who participated for the way they kept to the timesheet with no delays, and no delays either in playing the game. On tricky greens with many undulations, scoring was tough with many tales of putts overshooting the hole and the return too often failing to find the hole.

Tony Harford (13), John Joe Cullen (18), Aidan O’Connor (19) and Kenny Irwin (21) took the top prize with 90 points. On 86 points and in second place were Steve Travis (17), Luke Power (19), John Joe Murray (19) and Les Jastrebski (25).

Placed third were John Browne (13), Willie Naddy (19), Frank Boyle (20) and Tony Sexton (24) with 84 points, whilst fourth prize went to John Kennedy (16), P.J. McGrath (16), Kevin Treacy (19) and Martin Burke (25) with 82 points.

Tommy Ryan (15), Hughie O’Connor (18), Tony Redmond (18) and Jim Kehoe (24) were fifth with 81 points, and Denis Kirwan (11), John Murphy (17), Brian Dolan (22) and Jamesie Murphy (23) won the Titleist balls for finishing sixth with 80 points.

It was back to normality and Irish weather at Tinneranny on Thursday when a miserable wet day swept in from the south-west. Wisely we decided to curtail our normal 18hole competition and instead opted to only play 14 holes. The weather improved and we got a reasonable dry period in between outbreaks of rain in which to complete our shortened round of golf.

With a champagne scramble on the schedule and placing everywhere, some good scores were recorded considering the conditions. A three-person team benefiting from the allowance of five points took the honours. They were newcomer Andy Lawlor (11), Robert O’Dwyer (20) and Seán O hUigin (20) with 72 points (67+5).

Following closely in second place on 71 points came John Kennedy (16), Peter Goggin (17), Willie Naddy (19) and Jamesie Murphy (23). Third place went to Patsy Farrell (15), Martin Forristal (19), Aidan O’Connor (19) and Martin Hartley (22) with 70 points. Nearest the pin prize on the ninth hole was won by Willie Naddy.

Next Thursday is club open singles so we have no team game. We will take names for our outing to Bunclody on Tuesday, April 18, and the entry fee of €25 must be paid by Thursday, April 13.

You may book your place by texting or phoning Jamesie Murphy on 085-1846172 as soon as possible.

PAULINE’SSOCIETY

The long and demanding Castlecomer golf course hosted President Pat McGrath’s day out, and once again proved a big test for all concerned.

But it proved to be no obstacle to the first three home, led in by Stephen Mahon on 40 points followed closely by M. O’Neill in second and Frank McGuinness who finished third on the countback.

Seamus Mahon managed to keep the ball on the 18th fairway despite a gusting wind to take the longest drive prize. Nearest to the pin prizes went to M. O’Neill and Seamus Mahon. Many thanks to those who made the trip, and helped to make it a great day for Pat.

A big attendance would be appreciated on April 15 in Enniscorthy Golf Club for the final outing of the current year which is the Captain’s day. Craig Tracy has served his term with great dedication and would like to go out of office on a high with a big turn-out.

Names of those intending to play should if possible be entered on the sheet in Pauline’s bar before 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 11.

NEWROSSLADIES

Last Wednesday was another dismal day! There was a good turn-out though for the Blossoms Ladies’ Boutique-sponsored prize.

Results: 1, Teresa Foley (19), 40 points; 2, Pat Purcell (18), 33 points; 3, Margaret Furlong Adm. (16), 33 points.

At the next prize-giving night (Wednesday, April 12), Margaret O’Hanlon has very kindly offered to give us a short preview of her summer range. We urge as many of you as possible to join us for this lovely gesture. There is no charge for this mini fashion show so do come along to show our gratitude to the proprietor. There is placing on the fairway only until further notice. Online booking opens now at 9 p.m. In our diary you will read that ladies can only avail of ‘grace’ days three times during the year. This is no longer the case and there is no limit to the Saturdays or Sundays you wish to play for the following weekly competition.

On April 5 our competition is 18-hole stableford with a Senior prize included, sponsored by Sweeney’s Garden Centre, New Ross. Many thanks to Eddie and Bernie for your continued support, as we are very appreciative of it. Don’t forget to promote the Easter Kids’ Camp running for three days from Tuesday, April 18, to Thursday, April 20. It is great value at €15 for the two-hour daily golf tuition. It sounds like great fun too, so if you know any children who might be at a loose end during the holidays, the golf camp might fit the bill.

Clubs will be provided and a snack also. The club needs to generate as much income as possible as well as encouraging youngsters to take an interest in golf, so your help on this one is vital.

There was great news from the first inter-club match of the season! The New Ross Intermediate team was victorious over Tramore in Waterford Castle on Saturday.

Thank you to managers, team members and caddies for your commitment to your club, and best of luck in the next round.

Easter is just around the corner - four days of golf to choose from with an open 18-hole two-person champagne format. All we need is some nice weather! Book online as soon as you have a partner.

This open Easter classic from Friday, April 14, to Monday, April 17, will be sponsored by Nolan Transport, New Ross, for which we are very grateful.
