HOW SARAH, CLAIRE AND PADRAIG ARE GETTING ON

-

Two weeks to go and I finally feel confident I’ll make it across the 10km line. I’ve only done five runs in the last two weeks: they included my first ever 10km distance, a 12km, and then some shorter runs too. What surprised me this week is that the 3km run I did was the worst run of all, I didn’t enjoy one bit of it.

The weather has been lovely the last two weeks so last Saturday I went to Rosslare and tried the course for the Wexford triathlon club’s annual 10km Easter race. It was a lovely run and the first time I ever made it that far. I was happy enough with my time too – if I keep it close to that time for the Wexford run I would be really happy.

I was hoping to take part in the actual race this coming Monday but unfortunately work commitments have changed. After work on Wednesday I decided to try to up my distance again and went for 12km on a route I knew once I started I had to finish itk, and I did it.

I did pick up a few blisters on the longer runs but it was my own fault and down to the wrong socks rather than my runners. I had also thought about buying a lovely new pair for race day but was strongly advised not to do that because they would need to be broken in well beforehand so I’ll stick with my trusty old ones for now.

Finally preparations are under way and just hoping to stay injury free till the 23rd.

It’s hard to believe it’s just two weeks till the 10k now. I am really looking forward to it and can’t wait to get to the start line.

The last two weeks have gone without any major problems and I have been able to do a few 11k runs that will really help me on the day of the run.

Last week myself, Eva, Sinéad, Robbie and Dylan ran the 5k Blue Run for the rainbow unit in Scoile Mhuire. What a fantastic day! The sun shone and the run was really well marshaled. Huge well done to everyone involved.

This whole journey has been fantastic for me I have to say I couldn’t have done it without my friends and family support. To all of them I have to say thank you. I have so much to be grateful for and am so lucky to have such great family and friends.

A special good luck has to go out to my son Robbie doing the 10k with me. I am so proud of him. Also to my brother Steve, who is doing the half marathon. Good luck to my fellow leaders Sarah and Pádraig as well – I’m looking forward to seeing you again at the start line.

I did the Hope and Dream run in Enniscorthy this weekend with my sister Áine. She did the 10k run in 44 minutes. I was delighted for her. All her training with her personal trainer David Doyle from Templeudigan has really paid off. He is a tough trainer but worth it. I did the 10 mile in 1 hour 19 minutes. I was delighted with it, way faster than I expected. The buzz of running alongside other people would really help you and drive you on.

I was a bit stiff after it so I went to my physio Joanne Roche from Carrig-on-Bannow. I think she was in bad form – between boxing me and walking on my back I was broken up. I think I might do her for assault!

I’m really looking forward to the half marathon now in two weeks. I will cram in two good weeks of training now. It’s like two weeks before the Leaving Cert: you realise it’s finally here, and say, I should have done more earlier. But I think I’m ready now. No matter what time I do it in, I know I’m going to enjoy it and be glad that I did it. See you all in two weeks!
