Gorey second strings savour success in league
IT PROVED to be a great weekend for ‘B’ teams in Gorey in the Wexford and District Schoolboys Soccer League, with second-string teams from both Celtic and Rangers tasting title glory.
Gorey Celtic smacked seven past Glynn Barntown to wrap up the Under-13 Division 3 title in style. The Mullaunfin side have been superb this season, going unbeaten in the league, winning seven and drawing just three of their encounters.
Undoubtedly, the key to their success was a 1-0 away win against nearest challengers Forth Celtic ‘B’, a result that has proved to be the difference between two fairly evenly-matched sides. The champions have scored 35 times on their way to the title and will be looking to keep their progress going next season.
Gorey Rangers are the Under-15 Division 3 champions after a last day showdown with fellow title challengers Kilmore. Both sides went into the last game deadlocked on 24 points from nine games, needing to win the match to take the crown and prevent a play-off.
It was Rangers, who had surprisingly lost to Tombrack 7-0 but beaten Kilmore away earlier in the season, who came out on top. Their success has been built on winning tight games, as four of their matches have been decided by just one goal and the champions have won all of them.
Elsewhere, in the Under-11 Cup, North End defeated Forth Celtic in the last remaining quarter-final. They will meet Gorey Rangers in the last four while new Division 1 champions Cloughbawn face Bunclody.
Bridge Rovers took the opportunity to move clear of North End in Division 1A by beating Gorey Celtic. Division 2A and Division 3 could be sewn up tonight (Tuesday), as Bunclody will take the former with victory over Tombrack while Newpark will claim the latter if they can better the result of New Ross Town ‘B’.
In the Under-12 leagues, during last week, North End United kept their hopes of the Division 1A title alive with a win at Courtown. Rosslare Rangers did likewise in Division 2, edging Shamrock Rovers, while Bunclody and Curracloe stayed on track in Division 2A with 4-0 wins. Shelburne took one huge leap towards the Division 3 title with a massive 3-1 success against Forth Celtic ‘B’.
Glynn Barntown became the first side into the Under-13 Cup semi-finals after beating St. Leonards last week. They were followed four days later by Wexford Celtic, who beat Shamrock Rovers on spot-kicks. In the league, Shelburne must wait on other results to see if their six wins and six draws will be enough for the Division 2A title.
Gorey Rangers and Forth Celtic both won in Under-15 Division 1 to remain first and second. New Ross Celtic picked up the League Division 2 trophy they won a few weeks back and did it in style. In Division 2A, Enniscorthy Town will win the title if they beat Cloughbawn tonight (Tuesday), but should they lose their destiny will be out of their own hands.
North End kept their slim Under-16 Division 1 hopes alive with a 3-0 win at Forth Celtic. Rathnure are right in the mix in Division 3 after a taking the points home from Forth Celtic ‘B’, while Gorey Celtic and Bridge Rovers continue to win in Division 4.
