Lots still to play for with 18 titles to be decided
WITH 18 league titles still up for grabs heading into this week, there’s still plenty left to play for in the Wexford and District Schoolboys Soccer Leagues.
North End and Bridge Rovers remain on a collision course in Under-11 Division 1A, with the Wexford town side set to join their Castlebridge rivals at the summit with a win over Courtown today (Tuesday).
The game involving New Ross Town B in Division 3 was postponed last week, meaning Newpark must continue to wait to claim the championship crown. Rathnure moved a step closer in Division 4 with victory over Gorey Rangers B last week. They will take the title with a point or better in their final game against Glynn-Barntown B.
New Ross Town and Forth Celtic joined St. Joseph’s at the summit of Under-12 Division 1 after wins at the weekend. Gorey Celtic remain top of Division 1A but New Ross Celtic moved alongside them after a draw with Blackwater. It’s a similar story in Division 2 where Rosslare Rangers have been joined by Fastnet in second, a point behind Glynn Barntown.
Division 1 league leaders Wexford Albion will face Wexford Celtic in the Under-13 Cup semi-finals after the Kennedy Park side dismissed Bridge Rovers in their last eight clash. They will also move within sniffing distance of the league crown if they can beat the last realistic challengers, All Blacks, this evening (Tuesday).
Elsewhere, Shamrock Rovers’ win against St. Leonards means Fethard will have to get a result against the Enniscorthy town side in the final game of the season if they are to take the Division 1A crown. The seasiders sent All Blacks packing in the quarters of the cup and will face Glynn Barntown in the last four.
Killenagh’s third win in a row in Division 2A means they take the title if they win all three of their remaining games. Oylegate, who they face in one of those ties, have a similar equation while Shelburne must wait and hope.
No games were played in Under-14 Division 1 where Gorey Rangers and North End continue to battle it out. Ballymurn and Newpark go head-to-head in Division 3 and the winner will be crowned champion, while a draw would mean a play-off is needed.
In Under-15 Division 1, Gorey Rangers’ win over North End last week means they will clinch the silverware with victory against Forth Celtic tonight. In Division 2A Cloughbawn won the battle of the top two against Enniscorthy Town and need seven points from their final three games to finish top of the table.
North End’s victory against Gorey Rangers sends the Under-16 Division 1 title to the last game of the season and means Ferns need a positive result against Forth Celtic to be crowned.
The top three in Division 3 all won their games, so the meeting of Cloughbawn and Rathnure tomorrow (Wednesday) is going to prove fatal to the hopes of at least one of them. Gorey Celtic edged clear of Bridge Rovers in Division 4 after the Castlebridge club were held in a thrilling 4-4 draw with Wexford Celtic.
