PHILIP (Phil) Siggins was a devoted husband and loving father who passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family.
Phil was born on January 6, 1934, to John and Lily Siggins of Carigeen Street, Wexford where he attended the CBS School before leaving at a young age to begin work. Phil began working in Pierces Foundry (now Tesco) where they manufactured ploughs and other farm machinery.
He then joined Sealink Ferries (now known as Stena) and as his love and passion for the sea continued he went on to join British Petroleum Tankers where he worked hard for 17 years as a Chief Cook.
Even though Phil was a well travelled man, his heart always belonged in Wexford.
Phil returned regularly to Wexford after months on the water. He met his sweetheart Breda from Bishopswater at the age of 25 and they later married in 1961 and set up home in Corish Park. The couple, who first met at the age of seven through friends of family, went on to have four children – Paul, Todd, Philip and Maureen.
Phil gave up the sea due to a illness in 1977 but this did not stop him from living life. He made a promise to God that if he recovered from his sickness he would attend Mass on a daily basis which he did for 31 years in Clonard until his sad passing. For many years Phil could be seen walking his dog for miles with his friends but as time caught up with them 10 a.m. Mass became their new daily routine and they collectively became known as the ‘Last of the Summer Wine’.
Phil encountered many more illnesses over the years but never once complained. He always had that big warm smile which most people knew him by.
Phil is survived by his wife Breda, his four children Paul, Todd, Philip and Maureen, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and his extended family. A Months Mind Mass will be held Sunday, May 7, at 11.30 a.m. in Clonard Church.
