Glynn-Barntown hit back

- JFC GROUP A in St. Patrick’s Park, Enniscorthy

GLYNN-BARNTOWN 3-9 MONAGEER-BOOLAVOGUE 1-11 GLYNN-BARNTOWN overturned an eight-point deficit to open their Enniscorthy Farm Systems Junior football championship Group A campaign with a victory over Monageer-Boolavogue in St. Patrick’s Park on Sunday.

The instigators of the revival were two early substitutes, with Jack Brazzill and Dylan Lyne instrumental in the turnaround in the final ten minutes. With 50 minutes on the clock, Monageer-Boolavogue looked set for the first win of the young campaign.

They could have been further ahead, as a goal was possibly on when Morgan Gahan fired over to make it 1-11 to 0-6, but when the his side missed a close-range free moments later it was the fillip that Glynn-Barntown needed.

That and Lyne’s goal that he bundled home from near the posts to start the revival. The St. Peter’s man was then fouled twice for spot-kicks that Seán Carmody converted as the Killurin-based side scored 3-3 without reply in the final ten minutes.

Earlier Monageer-Boolavogue looked to be cantering to victory in a positive first-half. Matthew Dunne, Cathal Walsh and the lively James Sweeney all had a pair of points apiece on the scoreboard as their side eased into an 0-8 to 0-3 interval advantage.

Things looked even rosier when Sweeney followed up after his initial effort that cracked the crossbar and forced home the game’s opening goal shortly after the re-start (1-8 to 0-4). Twice Monageer-Boolavogue led by eight but Glynn-Barntown’s late show took the points.

Monageer-Boolavogue have two tricky looking games left against St. Martin’s and Rathgarogue-Cushinstown, and wins will be needed to save their season.
