Celtic seal league with runaway win

Perfect record with one game to go

- DEAN GOODISON in Mullaunfin

HOSTS GOREY Celtic wrapped up the Wexford and District Schoolboys Soccer Under-16 Division 4 title in style on Saturday, firing five past New Ross Town to continue their perfect league record.

With one game still to go against closest challengers Bridge Rovers, the Mullaunfin boys have cantered to success with eleven consecutive wins. It’s just desserts for a lot of hard work from the table-toppers, as it’s clear they put a great deal of effort into ending their schoolboy years in style.

They were also determined to get it wrapped up before facing their Castlebridge foes in their final game of the season. They came out of the blocks fast, attacking their visitors from Ross with speed and intent from the first whistle.

Indeed, they had already created a couple of half-chances by the time they took the lead in the sixth minute. A theme of the first-half, Celtic did a lot of work in their opponents’ half but their goals tended to come fairly easily to them.

Caleb Byrne-Murphy netted the first from the edge of the area with an excellent finish low to the right corner. Moments after Barry Levingston thundered a shot off the crossbar, James Doran flighted a 40-yard attempt over Max Hoff to make it 2-0.

The celebrations to Celtic’s second goal proved somewhat muted, except for an overjoyed Doran who seemed a little befuddled by his team-mates’ indifference. Celtic made it three in the 19th minute, and again it was Byrne-Murphy netting, this time from a right-wing free-kick.

New Ross Town had shown little up to this point but they did nearly get themselves back into the game when Adam Williams drifted into the penalty area and flashed a rocket narrowly over the crossbar.

Tiarnan Feeley and Leving- stone both missed the target with half-chances late in the half, while Rob Murphy saw his goalbound volley deflected behind. Still, the home side were plenty comfortable at the interval.

Playing with the elements at their backs, Ross Town battled away early in the second-half without creating much. It was no surprise when Celtic went four up in the 54th minute when Byrne-Murphy squared to Owen Mooney and the substitute attacker found the net at the second attempt.

Gorey began to penetrate the visitors’ defence more and more as the half wore on and only some fine goalkeeping by Max Hoff, and last-gasp defending from Craig McDonald, kept them from running up a bigger win.

However, Gorey did add a fifth in the 66th minute when Levingstone got the rewards for a tireless performance when finishing past Hoff after an excellent George Aldao pass to cap their title-winning display in style.
