DARKNESS INTO LIGHT: Darkness into Light is Pieta House’s annual fundraising and awareness event that will take place Saturday, May 6, at 4.15 a.m. around County Wexford. The event helps to promote suicide prevention and to tackle the stigma that leads people to the doors of Pieta House centres. The charity provides a free, therapeutic approach to people who are in suicidal distress. Over 16,000 people are expected to take part this year with Wexford Town and New Ross joining in on the national event for the first time with Enniscorthy and Courtown. Participants in Wexford Town will meet at St Joseph’s Community Centre, towards White Mill Road, by Woodie’s, onto Clonard Road, continuing on Summerhill Road, going by St Aidan’s SuperValu and back to St Joseph’s Community Centre. Courtown will meet at Flanagan’s Wharf 30 minutes prior to starting time, go along the R742, Red Row Road, by Pirates Cove and back to the start at Flanagan’s Wharf. Everyone for the New Ross walk will meet at The Apex, Bosheen with Enniscorthy all meeting in the Shamrocks GAA Club. For more information visit www.pieta.ie

FESTIVAL OF CHOIRS GOREY 2017: The Festival of Choirs is an inaugural charity event that will be staged Friday, May 5, at 7.30 p.m. in the Ashdown Park Hotel, Gorey in aid of North Wexford Hospice Nursing Trust. This is the very first Festival of Choirs Gorey and will feature choirs from all over the County. There is no admission charge and donations can be made directly to the Hospice on the door. Wexford Hospice Homecare was established in 1991 by a voluntary committee to provide a home based Specialist Palliative Care Service. CABARET NIGHT: Kennedy College in New Ross are holding a cabaret night on Sunday, May 6, at 9 p.m. in Corcoran’s pub, Irishtown, New Ross. Music is by Vibe and tickets cost €3. The event is being held to help raise some funds to send two Kennedy College (formerly New Ross Vocational College) students to Lourdes as youth helpers. Everyone is invited to come along for what promises to be a great night’s entertainment.

PIRACY IN THE ANCIENT WORLD: Thursday, May 4, at Wexford town library, at 7 p.m. Dr Philip de Souza, Senior Lecturer in Classics, UCD, the author of Piracy in the GraecoRoman World, will talk about the conditions which allowed piracy to flourish in the ancient Mediterranean, especially the close relationship between warfare and piracy, and the impact that pirates had on ancient society. THE FRANTICS ALBUM LAUNCH: The Frantics will launch their new album Rivers End in association with Shellshock Productions Friday, May 5, at 8.30 p.m. The Frantics are one of Wexford’s finest rock bands made up of Fran Greene on vocals and guitar, Dave Hastie on vocals and bass and Colm J Hassett on drums. The three man band have formed a quirky vibrant unique combination of passionate punk, soulful Ska and raunchy rock for their debut album. Rivers End will feature seven tracks produced by Irish artist Stano which was recorded in Hellfire Studios, Dublin. Tickets are €10 and can be bought from the Wexford Arts Centre, call 053 91 23764.

ANDY IRVINE: Andy Irvine, who has been performing throughout his 45 year career, will put on a concert Saturday, May 6, at 8.30 p.m. in The Presentation Centre, Enniscorthy. From ‘Sweeney’s Men’ in the mid 60s, to the enormous success of ‘Planxty’ in the 70s and then from ‘Patrick Street’ to ‘Andy Irvine & Dónal Lunny’s Mozaik’, Andy has been a world music pioneer and an icon for traditional music and musicians. DAROL ANGER & REPUBLIC OF STRINGS: National Opera House, 8 p.m. on Friday, May 5. With his unique genre-bending blend of bluegrass, jazz, folk and classical styles, Grammy nominated fiddler Darol Anger is a master of the unexpected. Darting from Swedish polkas to Brazilian choro before segueing seamlessly into a soul classic, all delivered with the rollicking abandon of a hootenanny.
