SO many people swear by how focusing on gratitude helps them get their head and heart in the right space for the day.

Since I have started this column several people have approached me and shared how being grateful helps them enjoy what they have, create what they want and generally feel good and confident daily.

If you are afraid or angry, you cannot be grateful. The opposite is also true. Tony Robbins has a 10-minute gratitude routine every morning. He first focusses on three life situations he feels grateful about for three minutes. He then focuses on his health and the health and wellbeing of those close to him. Finally, he focuses on three outcomes of things he is working on and wants to accomplish. He sees them in his minds-eye, feels them as done and is totally grateful for them.

Others do it in the evening before bed. Some write lists. Some do it in their minds. Most routines last 10–15 minutes. Some do it both in the morning and evening.

A good friend and highly successful person in Wexford loves his evening gratitude list. He falls asleep thinking only good things that happened that day and wakes up the next day feeling refreshed and confident about the good things that will happen that day too.

Apart from meditation and exercise it is the daily habit I most consistent­ly hear about from successful people. The other thing about gratitude is that there are so many things for each and every one of us to be grateful for that it is relatively easy to do.

Another amazing thing about gratitude is that the feeling of gratitude automatica­lly brings us into the heart. This is the best place to come from. When we are centred in our heart we connect in the right way with others. When we are in the head, we can be rigid and stuck in the past or notional ideas of what we and others should or
