Green light for €2.5m outdoor activity centre

-

A MAJOR new outdoor pursuits centre is due to open in 2019 on the outskirts of Wexford town.

Work is due to commence on Carrigfoyle activity centre in Forth Mountain in early 2018.

Wexford County Council CEO Tom Enright said the project will cost over €2.5m to complete and will include aerial rock climbing, canoeing, zip wires, mountain bike trails and more. The council will be appointing consultant engineers to design the details of the centre this summer.

‘We will be going to tender on this before the summer,’ he said.

The centre – which is being built in partnership with the Education and Training board which operatres Shielbaggan Outdoor Education Centre in Ramsgrange – will be making full use of the natural amenities in the area, particularly the lake that now sits where the quarry once did and the surrounding woodland, which is owned by Coillte, who have approved three looped walkways on their land.

Mr Enright said: ‘Carrigfoyle is a €2.5m project we are working on. Along with the new Min Ryan Park in Clonard, which tender documents are almost ready for, they will add to the area’s appeal. We have an established operator and funding is allocated for the activity centre. Carrigfoyle will be under construction in the next 12 months.’

The council plans to invest millions on developing the town and district’s activity tourism offering, which will also benefit local residents who enjoy outdoor activities. This includes the planned development of Greenway routes.

A 48 km Greenway along the Rosslare to Waterford line, to rival the Dungarvan to Waterford Greenway, is planned, along with a Wexford to Curracloe Greenway, following the coast, and a Wexford to Rosslare Greenway.
