Christy, 27, is the first citizen
MAUDLINTOWN has a new mayor following a four-cornered fight to raise funds for St Mary’s GAA Club.
The new mayor is Christy Lane who raised almost €8,000, with his Full Monty performance raising the most for his fund-raising campaign which included an Easter fun day, sponsorship cards and teenage discos.
Christy said his boss Michael Hanrahan, from Hanrahan’s Supermarket, in the Faythe, took part in the Full Monty as well.
‘ That was some night. I’m not even married and I was almost divorced afterwards,’ said the 27 year old.
Christy said his plans as mayor included a family field day on the Green, weekly bingo at the Sailing Cot, regular clean-ups around the local area and The Rocks and discos for the children.
He said that overall the four candidates for the mayorality raised ‘ the bones of €14,000’.
During Sunday night’s presentation at The Sailing Cot, Breda Whelan presented Christy with a set of chains of office that had belonged to her late husband Patsy who was mayor of Pairc Garman from 1985 to 1986.
During the mayoral contest, voting buckets were placed in shops and supermarkets around Wexford town and Maudlintown with every euro donated equating to a single vote.
The four candidates were Christy, Paddy Swords, Matty O’Gorman and John Creane.
Organiser John Stafford said this year’s Maudlintown mayorality was ‘for fun and to help our club out’ with the money raised going towards the club’s ‘Rock’s Development’.
This is the club’s 60th anniversary with a mayorality only take place every six years. The outgoing mayor was Paddy Swords.
