MARGARET (MAGGIE) CARTHY, who passed away suddenly at her Yoletown, Ballycullane on April 19 aged 88, was a devoted wife, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, dedicating her life to her family.
Born in Kilcavan, Wellingtonbridge on June 29, 1928 to Catherine Stafford and Stephen Keane, Maggie’s mother passed away when she was only 3-years-old and she was reared by her father who was the local postman, along with her sister Anne.
She attended school in Carrig on Bannow and went on to work in General Providers, Wellingtonbridge, which is now the village pub.
She married Martin Carthy in 1952 and they lived in Clonmines for a time before moving to Ballycullane in 1957, where she went on to rear her family, Margo, Maisie, Stephen, Martin, Noel and James.
She was also an active member of Grantstown Day Care Centre and the church choir in Ballycullane for many years.
A bubbly, friendly woman, Maggie loved music and singing, hailing, as she did, from a very musical family; her father was an All Ireland winning flute player and her uncles were also talented musicians.
She was a house proud woman who loved gardening and having visitors over.
Maggie always kept in touch with her family and was very proud of their achievements.
Noel, his wife Teresa and her daughter Sarah Jane, moved in 15 years ago when her health started to fail. She passed away at her home in the early hours of April 19.
Maggie’s funeral Mass was held in St Martin’s Church in Ballycullane on Friday, April 21, where Tony Jeffers and her grandchilldren performed. She was interred afterwards in Ballycullane Cemetery.
Maggie is sadly missed by her children; daughther-in-law; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; nephews; nieces; relatives and friends.
