Labour stalwarts honoured for contribution
THE Labour Party honoured two of its long-serving stalwarts at its recent national conference at Clayton Whites Hotel in Wexford town.
Paddy Greene, from Taghmon, and Betty Moran, from Wexford town, were both described as key pieces of the local party, always willing to work for its betterment.
Paddy Greene , together with the Walsh Family, has been the anchor of the Taghmon Branch of the Labour Party for decades.
Originally from County Roscommon, Paddy came to Wexford in search of employment. He married his beloved Marie and settled down in Taghmon.
Renowned for his tallying skills, Paddy is active both during campaigns and in accurately predicting outcomes on the day of the count.
Paddy is a well known Community Activist, involved in every positive development in the hinterland of his home Village. From his local GAA club to his work for the Day Care Centre and Meals on Wheels, whenever there is community work to be done, Paddy is there in the thick of it.
An Officer of the Labour Party Taghmon Branch for decades, Paddy has also served with distinction as Chairman of the Labour Party Constituency Council.
A feature of Dail Elections in the Village of Taghmon is the Party caravans parked outside the local polling station. Paddy always insured that the Labour Party caravan had the best location and was best postered, not to mention a good place to drop in for refreshments during the day.
Betty Moran, from Wexford town branch has been a Labour Party stalwart all her life.
From a deep-rooted Labour Family, she has been involved in every election campaign from the earliest days of Brendan Corish right up to the current Dail. Together with her much-loved, late departed sister Carmel and her brother the redoubtable Fonzo Mahon, she has walked every street in the four towns of County Wexford and every rural byway, advancing the cause of Labour. Her family home became part of Election Headquarters, with every family member and visitor expected to address envelopes and stuff campaign leaflets.
Betty was one of the Team that ran ‘ The Red Rose Café’ which fed the multitudes on Election days.
An assiduous attender at all Labour Party Meetings, Betty remains part of the spine of the Labour Organisation in Wexford Town. Throughout her long service Betty has gained both respect and the love of the whole membership in the Wexford Constituency.
