ROSSLARELADIES

On Tuesday we played the Australian spoons Scotch foursomes club qualifier competition. This competition was originally set up in Australia in 1969 to help fund elite players participating in international tournaments.

Our players were very focused, resulting in high scores. Gerarde Mahon and Sheila Doyle had a wonderful score of 43 points. They will now go on to compete at district level with the gross winners, Valerie Doyle and Susan Evans. Best of luck in Carlow on July 10 and well done!

Also a big well done to Jeanne Hamill who got a holein-one on Monday on the eighth hole. The screams of joy could nearly be heard in the clubhouse.

It was a good week for our teams. The Junior foursomes beat Enniscorthy in Wexford. Well done to team players Vonnie O’Connor and Eleanor Wardlaw, Mary McDonald and Karen O’Keeffe, Vandra Deacon and Mairéad Esmonde, and managers Sheila Doyle and Angela Murphy.

The Intermediate Cup beat Baltinglass in Arklow. Well done to team players Mary O’Shaughnessy, Norrie Goff, Anne Redmond, Máire Farrell and Carmel Quinlivan, managers Niamh Byrne and Vandra Deacon, and caddies.

We would like to wish the best to the Junior Cup team playing Kilkenny in New Ross on May 14 at 2.30 p.m. managed by Mary O’Shaughnessy and Dorcas Maher, and the Boyne team playing Woodenbridge with three away and two at home on May 15 at 3 p.m., managed by Catherine Howard and Mary Barry.

ST. HELEN’S

Bank Holiday Monday’s open singles produced the round of the year so far, with Pat O’Connor returning a gross three under par 69. Well done Pat, your new handicap of 4 won’t last long if you keep up your present form.

Our South Leinster Trophy team put up a great display against an experienced team from our neighbours Rosslare. When Jim Brauneisen and Gerry Byrne won two of the three away games, we appeared set for victory.

Rosslare, however, had other ideas as they staged a great fightback in St. Helen’s. Terry O’Toole had put us one up but the visitors won the next two, with Nick Hayes and Chris Dowling both beaten on the 16th.

The deciding game looked all over as Maurice Cooper was two down standing on the 17th tee box. Maurice wasn’t surrendering however, as he won the 17th and 18th to bring the game to the 19th where the gallant Maurice had no answer to a brilliant birdie. Well done to all on a great effort.

NEWROSS

Due to the inclement weather on the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, April 29-30, the competition for the coveted P.G. Walsh trophy had to be postponed. It will be played for at a later date.

Meanwhile, the Tuesday evening open fourball is proving to be very attractive to members both male and female. The scoring is hot too over the 14 holes of the competition.

Take last Tuesday evening in the Crop Care-sponsored event for example when three teams carded excellent returns of 35 points each.

It took a countback over the last nine holes before a verdict could be announced. In the end the pairing of Brendan Duffin (8) and Noel Dunne (19) took the first prize.

It was nice to see two ladies in the persons of Jacqui Morgan (13) and Maria Burford (13) finish runners-up. Third place went to John Whelan (15) and Frank Cullen (18), again scoring 35 points.

This Tuesday evening, May 9, the four amigos team up to sponsor the competition.

They are Mick Malone, Bill Hurley, Harry Rheinhart and George Walsh, to whom the club extend their sincere gratitude.
