1 TOURS OF THE WEXFORD WILDFOWL RESERVE: Guided tours of Wexford Wildfowl Reserve at Ardcavan are taking place week day (Monday to Friday) at 3 p.m. Learn the history of the North Slob and Wexford Wildfowl Reserve from its reclamation from the sea in the 1840s to the establishment of the reserve for thousands of the migrating Greenland White-fronted Goose and flocks of other birds. Bring binoculars if you have them, some pairs are provided. No fee and no booking are required, just come along and enquire at reception. This tour is both indoors and outdoors, most of the itinerary (apart from the observation tower) is wheelchair accessible. This tour caters to all ages. Winner of the PJ O’Connor Award 2014, it tells the story of two elderly farmers, Eamon and Nashee who meet at a gate on a remote hillside. They are old rivals and old neighbours. Their conversation is of a gentler time. However, there is nothing gentle about today’s conversation. They are forced to confront each other with some heartbreaking truths! It is a celebration of the humour, resilience and endearing innocence of an older generation. Directed by Bairbre Ni Chaoimh, bookings on (053) 9122144. 3 HOSPICE BARBECUE: The annual barbecue in aid of North Wexford Hospice Nursing Trust takes place on Saturday, May 13, in the Amber Springs Hotel, Gorey. The hotel chefs will be serving up a delicious steak barbecue from 8.30 p.m. to 10.30 p.m. Dancing will follow from 10.30 p.m. with music from The Monday Night Crew and Theresa and the Stars. Tickets at €25 are available from James Tomkins Suzuki, The Monument, Gorey. 4 ARTHUR MILLER PLAY: New Ross Drama Workshop members perform Arthur Miller’s ‘All My Sons’ from Thursday to Saturday, May 11th to 13th in St Michael’s Theatre, New Ross. All My Sons is the Post-World War II examination of the Keller’s, a seemingly “All American” family. Curtain up for All My Sons each night is at 8 p.m. sharp. Tickets cost €12 and can be booked at St Michael’s Theatre box office on 051 421255. 5 AIRCONMECH 5KM. There will be a charity 5km walk, run and jog on May 14, at 11 a.m. in aid of the purchase of an MRI scanner for Wexford General Hospital. The event, ‘A Step in the Right Direction’ is part of AirconMech’s wellness programme promoting the importance of well being and mindfulness and the benefit that exercise has on mental and physical health. Registration is €10 for adults while children under 16 years are free. The race starts at the Kilcannon Business Park. Log onto www.airconmech.com for more details. 6 THE MAY LECTURE IN WEXFORD HISTORICAL SOCIETY’S SEASON OF TALKS: Will take place at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 17, in St Michael’s Centre, Green Street. The lecture is entitled ‘Roger Casement’ and it will be delivered by Angus Mitchell of the University of Limerick. Roger Casement, diplomat, knight of the realm and highly-respected figure in British society on one hand; revolutionary, gun-runner and Irish patriot on the other. This should be a very informative lecture on a very interesting figure involved in the 1916 Rising. Most definitely a lecture not to be missed. 7 GOREY WEEK OF THE ELDERLY: The 33rd annual Gorey Week of the Elderly kicked off last night, Monday, with a social evening in Courtown Golf Club. The line up for the rest of the week includes: storytelling at The Mill, Craanford, this evening, Tuesday, May 9; an evening including refreshments and a waltzing competition at St Columba’s Club, Gorey, on Wednesday. Guests from Ballygarrett will attend; an outing to Shekina Garden, Glendalough, on Thursday, as well as a visit to Avoca Handweavers, and dinner at Arklow Bay Hotel; and an ecumenical service in Gorey Methodist Church at 8 p.m. on Friday. This will be followed by tea and sandwiches and a talent competition in the adjoining hall.
