ONE of Wexford’s best known pubs, Maggie May’s in Monck Street has been sold for a price believed to be around €1.5 million to a local businessman who will take over the premises in mid-July.

Anthony Doyle, the owner of Londis Coolcotts Shopping Centre in Ferndale Park, is the new owner of the popular town-centre bar which was placed on the market by the Frayne family who developed the pub and ran it successfully for the past 10 years.

There were no bids at an advertised public auction held in the Talbot Hotel last Wednesday despite widespread expressions of interest in advance of the event from prospective purchasers in Ireland and abroad. However, a deal was brokered afterwards following intense negotiations with two separate parties.

They included Anthony Doyle and another business person from Roscommon.

When contacted, proprietor Virginia Frayne said she and her husband Denis are ‘more than happy’ with the price that the pub achieved. Maggie May’s had been advertised for sale with a guide price between €1.3 and €1.5 million. ‘We did get our reserve and more,’ she said. Virginia said they are ‘delighted’ that the pub has been purchased by a local man. She thanked the ‘great team’ at Maggie Mays for their loyal service.

It is expected that the pub will change hands mid-July but customers may not notice any significant changes as the successful premises is regarded as having a ‘winning formula’.
