Family woman Sheila found time for voluntary work
SHEILA Ormonde (nee O’ Carroll) of 10, Ard Carman who died recently was a native of Murroe in County Limerick who made Wexford her adopted home over 50 years ago.
The youngest of a family of 11 children, Sheila moved to Waterford after finishing her secondary education to train as a psychiatric nurse at St. Otteran’s Hospital.
She married David Ormonde in 1962, a marriage riage that lasted for 55 years. The couple moved to Ard Carman to rear their family. During her life in Wexford, Sheila was primarily a home-homemaker but also found time to involve her self in numerous voluntary organisations including the Irish Wheelchair Association, the Jaycees and the first creche in Clonard, also serving on the Ladies Committee in Clonard for many years.
Sheila enjoyed bingo and attended for many years at Dun Mhuire Hall and later in Clonard Community Centre where she enjoyed many evenings of ‘craic’ with loyal and devoted friends. She also enjoyed playing the Lotto and Telly Bingo and would not be disturbed by anyone while Telly Bingo was on television. Among the highlights of Sheila’s life were her annual holidays in Killarney with her friends Betty Hearne and Beta Kirwan, but especially her stays during the summer months with her dear friend Betty Hearne in Curracloe, who is now also sadly deceased.
Those holidays created many cherished memories and added years to Sheila’s life. Sheila was a proud Limerick woman and never lost contact with Murroe, the place of her birth. She travelled there with her family on summer holidays for many years. She was an avid supporter of GAA games. She played camogie on the St. Otteran’s Hospital team and was a formidable hurler.
She joined her husband David and their friends in attending many Wexford and Limerick hurling matches.Sheila’s passing is mourned by her husband David; her sons Richard and Michael; daughters Sheila and Grainne; her sons-in-law and daughters-in-law; her grandchildren; her nieces and nephews and extended family and friends.
