Council chairman says N11 roadworks are not necessary

-

THE chairman of Wexford County Council says roadworks causing tailbacks on the N11 are not necessary.

Speaking at last week’s Enniscorthy Municipal District meeting, Cllr Paddy Kavanagh said surfacing works being carried out between Scarawalsh and Ferns, which will not finish for another six weeks, are neither necessary nor urgent.

‘ The material they are using on that road would be enough to do the Enniscorthy district and I don’t really see the point. The road will be far less used in two year’s time once the bypass opens,’ said Cllr Kavanagh. However, Executive Engineer Joanne Kehoe said that ‘ the road had actually failed due to cracks and breakages from heavy machinery and overuse.’

She said if you walked the road you could see the damage that had been done to it and that the works being carried out do not affect the council budget as it is all funded by Transport Infrastructure Ireland.

The N11 had exceeded its life expectancy of 10 years as it was last resurfaced in 2004 and Ms Kehoe said ‘ that it would not have lasted another two years’.

Cllr Kavanagh said: ‘Many people are driving in from the country and doing a lot of damage to their cars from the bad back roads. I just hope that it was taken into account that that road will not be a main road for long as it doesn’t seem to be one that needed urgent attention.’
