OPEN DAY

The Open day at Artramon Gardens will take place on Sunday next, May 28, Gates open at 2 p.m and the gardens remain open till 5 p.m. You can stroll around the beautifully kept gardens, have the children explore the Fairy Garden and then enjoy some light refreshments in the garden.

A number of rooms in the downstairs part of the main house will also be open this year to the public. While you are having your cuppa, you can relax and enjoy the lovely music which will be supplied by the Wexford Folk Orchestra. Admission is €5 for adults, with children admitted for free.

WHIST

The whist sessions have now concluded in Glynn hall and will resume in Crossabeg for the summer months every Wednesday evening at 8 p.m. This year the sessions will take place at Kyle Forge.

SCHOOLS MARATHON

The national schools marathon which is being organised by the local St Killian’s Athletic club will be held at the community field in Crossabeg this Wednesday, May 24, commencing at 10.30 a.m. The event proved a marvellous success last year and this year it is hoped to have seven schools competing. The event was won by Crossabeg school last year and they are hoping to retain their title.

This is a very special event and great credit to the teams of children who organise themselves to run a full marathon in relays (all of 26 miles and 385 yards) around the track. Why not go along and give them your support. The atmosphere last year was fantastic from the competitors to the adults and organisers alike and this year’s event is eagerly awaited.

SCHOOLS ATHLETICS

Congratulations to Jack Forde, St Killian’s AC athlete who represented CBS Wexford school in the Leinster schools championships in Santry on Wednesday of last week. Jack came home with the gold medal which he won in the Junior High Jump (1.70m) which was a PB. He won a silver medal in the Junior 4Kg Shot Putt with a distance of 11.97m which was also a PB. We wish him all the very best in the all-Ireland Schools Championships on June 3.

Not to be outdone his sister Amy was competing for the Loreto School, Wexford, on Saturday last, and she came home with the bronze medal which she won in the Senior Hammer final with a new PB of 34.40m. She also finished in fourth place with another new PB of 29.96m in the Senior Discus. Well done, Amy.

COMMUNITY GAMES

TEAM EVENTS – The county semi-final of the boys under-12 outdoor Soccer match between Castlebridge/Crossabeg and Bree-Davidstown took place recently. Castlebridge/Crossabeg took an early lead and kept it right up to the final whistle and they won out comfortably on a 9-0 scoreline. Despite the scoreline, this was a very good game between the teams. Goal scorers for the winners were Paddy Connors (4) Chris Frawley (3) and Evan Cullen (2).

They then took on a team from Glynn-Barntown in the final on Sunday evening last. The match was played at the community field in Crossabeg. Castlebridge/ Crossabeg got off to a great start when Paddy Connors sent the ball to the back of the net after about 10 minutes. He scored a short while later and his team went into a 2-0 half time lead. This was a good final with both sides displaying some fine skills in an entertaining game. Cormac Mythen added Castlebridge/ Crossabegs’ third goal and Paddy Connors made it a hat-trick for himself and they finished off the game on a 4-0 scoreline.

Members of the team were Richard Barlow, Paddy Connors, Evan Cullen, Rory Davis, Chris Frawley, Shane Hall, Darragh Harris, Josh Kinsella, Ciaran Murphy, Cormac Mythen, Harry Sherlock, Darragh O’Neill, Cillian O’Leary, Rian Ormond, Noah Ryan and Connor Somers. The area also had teams competing in the handball finals.

The under-13 B team lost out to Taghmon in the semi-final on Sunday week last, while their A team met Taghmon in the final in Castlebridge Alley on Sunday evening last. Alas, they lost out to Taghmon and came away with the county silver medals.

The under-16 team also fell short and went down in their semi-final to a team from Taghmon. Well done to their mentors John Roche and Pádraig Devereux for getting the boys ready for the competitions and also to the local handball club in Castlebridge for the use of their premises for the finals.

The under-13 B team had Killian Buckley, Seán Denton, Robert Lambert, Adam Murphy and Joshua Roche on their panel while the A team were represented by Eamonn Moran, Niall Cullen, Adam Murphy, Jack Purcell and Ros Walker. The under-16 team had Joe Devereux, David Doyle, Kieran Hearne and Shane Kelly on their panel.

ATHLETICS FINALS – On Thursday evening of last week, the local Community Games Athletic finals were held in the community field in Crossabeg. The committee wish to thank most sincerely St. Killian`s club for giving up their training evening for the events, to Nicky and Mick who marked the field and had the Hurdles ready for the races. Thanks to all the members of St. Killian`s club who helped out, juvenile members and adults alike, the medal presenters, Sinead who was the Announcer, to Jason Moran, and the parents and children for their support.

The first three in each race are eligible to go forward to the county finals which will be held on Sunday, June 25 at The Hub in Enniscorthy. If your child is not available to compete on the day, please contact Anne on 0861980775 as soon as possible, and no later than the end of this week, so that a replacement can be found.

WEDDING BELLS

Congratulations to Paula, daughter of Anne and Jimmy O’Reilly, Ballyharron, Crossabeg, whose marriage to Mr Pat Foley, took place in Crossabeg church on Friday last.

CONDOLENCES

We extend our condolences to Mrs Josie Stephens and family, Kereight, on the death of her brother, Charlie Walsh, which took place in Port Talbot, Wales on Saturday, May 13, Cremation will take place in Port Talbot this Wednesday, May 24, Memorial Mass will be offered up in Castlebridge church with internment of ashes in Crosstown cemetery at a later date.

Our condolences also to Mrs Anne Kehoe and family, Kyle Upper, Crossabeg, on the death of her Father, Mr Andrew Thorpe, Dara Park, Newbridge, Co. Kildare, who died on Friday last. Requiem Mass took place in Ballymany church, Newbridge on Monday morning last with burial afterwards to St Conleth’s cemetery. R. I. P.

FIRST AID COURSE

CAMOGIE NEWS

Hard luck to the Junior Ladies from Oylegate-Glenbrien, who lost out to Oulart recently in the league final. Hard luck to the Intermediate Ladies, who lost out in their league final after a tough battle with Rathnure. Well done to both the under-14s and under-16s who had good wins over the Duffry and Killross Gaels respectively last week. Well done to all who took part in the under-10 blitz recently. A great day was had by all. A special thanks to all helpers on the day.
