Dervla Murphy’s travels taking her to Kilmore Quay

The internatio­nally-renowned travel writer Dervla Murphy has been confirmed as a special guest at the second Write By The Sea 2017 Literary Festival taking place in Kilmore Quay from Saturday, September 30, to Sunday, October 1.

Murphy who lives in Lismore, County Waterford will be interviewe­d on stage at the Stella Maris Centre in Kilmore Quay by the best-selling Wexford author Jackie Hayden at 4 pm on Saturday, September 30.

The doyenne of travel writers has written over 20 books about her adventures which began fifty years ago when she cycled from Dunkirk in France all the way through the Middle East To Delhi in India. She will be joined by the Belfast-based travel writer Geoff Hill who has circumnavi­gated the globe on his trusty motorcycle.

Confirming Murphy’s appearance, Write By The Sea committee member Therese Burke said: ‘It’s a tremendous coup to attract such a revered author as Dervla Murphy. Matching her eloquent prose to her fearless spirit, she has given us exciting and graphic accounts of her travels in and to India, Cuba, Palestine, Ethiopia, Siberia and elsewhere.’

‘She has been an inspiratio­n to new generation­s of travel writers and I believe our Kilmore Quay audience will find her thoughts equally inspiring. The fact that her public appearance­s are rare these days makes it a double privilege to welcome her to our festival.’
