- By DAVID TUCKER

WEXFORD Endurance Cyclist Kevin Cronin is to undertake a 2,500km road bike race to raise funds for the Windmill Therapeutic Centre.

The single-stage TransAtlanticWay Race is due to begin at the GPO in Dublin on Thursday, June 8 and will involve the 112 racers taking part in cycling the equivalent of the distance from Dublin to Rome, with 20,000 metres of climbing, a combined elevation of over twoand-a-half-times the height of Mount Everest.

Kevin must cycle his own route, avoiding motorways/ dual carriages, to the first check point in Derry and from there onto the Wild Atlantic Way, finishing at the second check point in Kinsale, where the clock stops. All racers carry a GPS tracker, in order to validate times and route, and through which the progress of the racers can be followed by friends and family. Windmill will maintain an update of Kevin’s progress on Windmill’s face book page . Wexford-based Windmill provides a day service to adults with mild to moderate intellectual disability, enablig them to develop and achieve a sense of fulfilment and belonging, preparing them to take on the demands of the modern world. While Windmill current- ly receives of state grants from HSE and Pobal, through the Department of Social Welfare, it continues to rely on the good will of community and friends to maintain and develop the services. Kevin, who is covering all costs of the self-supported race himself, says that all funds raised through his efforts and through the support of those who sponsor him, will go directly to Windmill and towards benefiting those accessing the Service. Kevin, a teacher in Bunclody Vocational College is married to Mary with two children Aisling and Barry, and has a lifelong love of adventure sports.
