THE future looks bright for two young rugby players, Jack Stafford from Drinagh and Greg McGrath from Murrintown, who were selected for the Irish U-20 team competing in the World Cup in Georgia.

To mark their achievements, a civic reception was held for both Jack and Greg at the Irish National Heritage Park.

Mayor of Wexford Frank Staples presented a plaque to the young players. Also in attendance were members of Wexford Wanderers where it all started for the duo.

Wanderers Chairman Declan Rossiter said: ‘Members from Wexford Wanderers are very proud as we, in the past, have produced rugby players that have achieved greatness.

‘I want to wish Jack and Greg the best of luck.

‘We will be watching their every move on the television in the World Cup.’

Jack, who is the son of former Wanderers captain Philip Stafford and his wife Paula, began playing for Wexford Wanderers when he was seven.

He then relocated to Glenstal Abbey School, Limerick when he was 13 years old where he played rugby for five years. After his time with Glenstal, Jack moved to Shannon RFC, Limerick before making it to the U-20 Munster A squad and then competing in the Six Nations with the U-20 Irish team.

Greg, son of Gary and Julie McGrath, started playing for Wexford Wanderers when he was eight years old, and still plays with the club from time to time.

When he moved to Dublin to attend DIT to study Electronics and Engineering he joined the Lansdowne Rugby Club’s under 20 squad before making it on to the U-18 Irish team, U-18 and U-20 Leinster teams and then the U-20 Irish team for the Six Nations.
